2005 Subaru Outback

- Great handling, very quiet even at speed, good performance
- Lags a bit too much with the automatic, rear seats cramped
I bought mine in the US and now live in Germany. I've had mine up to 135mph. It gets a bit unstable at 120 (starts to oscillate in the rear end). I keep up with BMW 5 series as a routine. It's VERY quiet all the way!

- Turbo is great, quiet and comfortable ride, looks great
- Fuel mileage is not that great, some turbo lag on the low end.
Got a great deal on the last white 2005 xt on the lot. Took it on the road to the Sierras after breaking it in and can't believe how powerful the turbo was when passing other cars! At the same time, the passenger compartment was quiet and comfortable. The leather seats are are very nice and the fit and finish compares well to my wife's G35 sports coupe. The rubber trunk tray is a cool feature and I love being able to simply take it off and hose it down to clean it. The sound system is pretty good but, I wish it could play MP3 discs. The huge sunroof is amazing. On the highway I can average 24 mpg but, getting around 17 to 18 mpg mixed city and highway driving. Wish it could be better but, still pretty happy with the car....read morehide

- Driving pleasure, very large moon roof, lots of storage capacity, very comfortable.
- Power outlets don't get power when car is off, can't use random on all CD's at same time.
Wow, sold my two mid 80's Audi 400 CS quattros and saved up for this one. Got excellent financing through credit union and put close to %25 down. Ran out and bought the Thule attachment for the roof rack, purchased a used basket from a guy on CraigsList for $20, mounted my Thule bike attchments and was good to go. We originally wanted a car that we could put our two rat terriers in the back, with plans to buy the $200 dog guard. Once we owned the car, and looked at all of the bonuses, we ended up purchasing two short leashes and two carribeaners. Attached the carribeanears to the back "tie down" rings and hooked the short leashes to the carribeaners. Total cost $24+tax. Now the dogs sit in the back, can't get to the back seat and I don't have a $200 metal grid blocking my view. GREAT, CHEAP SOLUTION. The car is a dream. We wanted to buy another AWD car and liked the look of the new Outbacks and Legacy waggons. After doing some comparisons on Consumer Reports, we decided to forget about the hybrids until there are more options. That left us with the Scooby Doos. I wanted the 2.5 XT for the de-tuned STI like engine, my girlfriend wanted the base model, thinking that leather seats weren't all that. Once we sat in a 2.5 XT Limited and did some more research, we decided that the extra cost was worth it. We found out that the non-limited version wasn't being offered in the 2006 model, which means to me, parts will be scarce in the years to come, if I need to replace a seat (which I did on both of my Audis). Plus, the moonroof is phenomenaly huge. The adjustable seats are great, no effort at all to adjust. I knew that I wanted the manual transmission, as I've never owned anything but, and don't really like automatics. Then I read reviews on the neat automatic shifters on the MOMO steering wheel and how great they were, only to read that if you really care about shifting quickly, you should just buy the manual. I did.
This weekend, packed the basket with EVERYTHING, loaded two bikes on top, threw the dogs in the back, grabbed the California Campers Guide, the California Dog Lovers Guide, and the California Lonely Planet and hit the road. Half way through the adventure we hit the 1000 mile break in point, and to celebrate I used the 2.5 XT's turbo to pass the 5 cars that moved to the right in the passing lane on Highway 1 to Santa Cruz. Can't wait to hit Tahoe in the winter. :)...read morehide

- Great fuel economy for an AWD car of this size, smooth ride, good ground clearance
- Radio could be better, not much else
I am very happy with my outback thus far. I heard some reports of lousey milage?? I don't know where that is coming from? I live in a farm area with a lot of slowing down for buggies, curves, etc. I am getting around 24+ around the area and 28 on the highway.
This car is a great value for what you spend. I was going to buy an AWD Vibe, and just stopped by to check out the Outback. I could not believe how much value you get for the money!
I love it so far!...read morehide

- Fun to drive, really fast
- gas mileage....but that's it
I was about to buy the 2.5i, but couldn't go back after driving the turbo. I think I paid a too much for the car, but it's really hard to complain. I love the car...better gas mileage and I would consider calling it perfect.
Quiet-smooth ride, nice stereo, functional.

- Good Fuel, accelerates great, looks better than a regular wagon
- better entertainment system needed
This is a good vehicle for the standard features that is included in this model. I priced this against the Dodge Magnum and the Saab 9-7X. Once I added in the needed features (i.e. leather seats, moon roof, heated mirrors etc) this turned out to be the best value. With all Subaru's you must remember that these vehicles adjust to your driving habits. If you are a jack start driver then this car will be a guzzler. If you drive in an economy mode then you will get very good mileage in this vehicle. I learned this when I owned the Forester XT. Any car that has at least 200 or more horsepower in it WILL NOT get you 40 miles to the gallon in the city or close to 50 on the highway. If you want that kind of mileage get a car with 100 to 110 horsepower. You MUST use premium gas in this car. I got this car fully loaded with the package and all the options including the mirror. I believe that a better sound system should be offered (similar to the Forester XT). I did add the sub woofer it helped. In order to enjoy the turbo fully on the highway use the sport mode if not just engage into it slowly. This car will take off. I was happy with the Forester XT and I am even happier with this car. My wife now drives the Forester XT she got rid of her Sante FE for the Forester. I think that this car could have a better space to store yor sunglasses. Other than that no car will have everything in it the way you want it....read morehide

- Fantastic Turning Radius, great surf-mobile, Smooth/Quiet engine, nice leg room
- rust in the bumper, lack of head room,
I was a little hesitant after listening to the sales rep at Subaru of Oakland tell me about how thid model would be the perfect car with someone with my lifestyle..surfboards, wetsuits, roll-dogs, ect. I was looking for reasons to pass this car up and head to another dealership, however the smooth ride and plethura of safety features had my writing a check immediately after the test drive. The car has been a pleasure and is the perfect ride for some like me who surfs daily at Ocean Beach.
A Con:Not that I windsurf, but If I were to pick up the hobby I'd wonder where to put a 12ft sail. The car is long, but it's not the length of a full size car or SUV. Anyway windsurfing's a waste of time so I'll stick to surfing....read morehide

- great acceleration, hold highway speeds well up hill with A/C, manual trans shifts smooth.
- not enough free play in clutch, not enough leg & hip room, poor sound system for the price
The car handles and accelerates great, though tires have weak sidewalls for handling, but not terribly bad. Front drivers seat has little legroom for my 6'4" size. Foot rest a tad too small, unless I'm driving barefoot. The manual transmission shifts very smooth, and motor is quiet for a turbo....read morehide

- Excellent performance, comfort plus high level of accessories standard with XT and Limited Package
- Wheel/tire combination mediocre, fuel economy poor and uses premium only
Dealer gave us good discount and ordered car exactly to our specifications from manufacturer - we were told that this would take up to 8 weeks - we received vehicle in 5 weeks. Although we are very satsified with performance and comfort, we are not happy with wheel/tire combination that is too all-season. We were originally given fuel consumption numbers that we have never been able to equal and were told that vehicle would run on plus - once we took delivery we saw that it required premium only. We still believe that we made an excellent choice and have enjoyed vehicle on three long trips so far. We will probably replace tires quickly....read morehide

- Tight construction, quality materials.
- Windshield cracked after a tiny pebble hit it.
Have you ever priced a 05 heated front windshield? Not Cheap! Great car otherwise. Good combination of performance and hauling capacity. Great pick up in the mountains. Good handling in the snow big ground clearance is nice for light off road blasting. I only bought it cause my 91 loyale is starting to have issues. Not too many features for a "Limited". Limited adjustments of the front seats an issue with taller drivers. The seat needs a tilt position. What it is now is basically in out up down....read morehide
