Subaru held the first drive for its new lightweight hatchback crossover in Hawaii last summer, and that seemed appropriate for the quirky car, often featured in a bright-orange color. It's got all the hallmarks of a vacation-destination tourist vehicle, able to do superficial off-roading without too much trouble, not scared by potholes or a little rain. As a consumer car, though, the Crosstrek is a much sketchier proposition. Though it does get excellent gas mileage and features good storage space, the Crosstrek, particularly when you take it off the trail and put it on the highway, has a flimsy, amusement-park-ride feel that makes it hard to love. Not as small or maneuverable as an Impreza, not as large or capable as an Outback, the XV Crosstrek feels like Subaru was trying to fill a niche where no filling was needed. But if it's an option on vacation, rent one. See more... See Less
