2006 Toyota Avalon User Reviews

Purchased As New
I bought this Avalon new in 2006 and I must say this has become my favorite daily driver of all the cars I've had and I've owned many. It just turned 184,000 miles. In that time I have not had one single mechanical problem. I did have the oil line recall fixed even though it never leaked. I had the accelerator recall done even though that never was a problem either. (NASA recently proved it impossible to have unintended acceleration. Ive consistently changed the oil. I had to replace the battery once but this car has the original spark plugs, water pump, serpentine belt, alternator, etc. EVERYTHING, its amazingly reliable. The 3.5 liter engine is sewing machine smooth and powerful. Ive averaged 27 mpg the whole time Ive had it. People say its an "old man" car but I dont think so. To me it is a a cheaper and bigger version of a ES350Lexus. The difference between the Avalon and Camry is huge. The feel and drive is just completely different. The Avalon feels like an expensive car and the Camry feels like a budget car. I still dont think I've seen a car with as much rear seat and leg room, its gigantic. The Avalon will carry five large adults with ease....read morehide

- Good fuel economy on highway, comfortable quiet ride, nice looking car
- Transmission slippage, hesitation, gear searching, steering column clicks, engine clicks
I love the look of this avalon. It rides nice, comfortable, the touring suspension handles well for a large car minus some road noise and bumps.
My biggest complaint is with the transmission. It searches for gears at low speeds, sometimes it gets confused when merging at highway speeds and the engine rev's for a few seconds before it decides to engage the gears. The drive train on this car is just a complete mess. It's terrible.
I have a love hate relationship because if it didn't have transmission issues it would have been the perfect car for me. I have owned it less than a year and am looking for a replacement already. Very dissapointed in Toyota....and this is my third toyota. I will prob just buy a maxima or a hyundai...
Stay away from this car unless you will spend 100% of the time on the highway.
WHen I spent 25k for a used toyota, i expected something better than this....read morehide

- Navigation system, 7 airbags, Push Button Start, Leather Seats, Wood Trim Style, V6 Engine, Roomy
Toyota Avalon Limited, WOW!!! I don't know why people talk bad about this car, maybe they're just jealous they don't have one. As you can see below, is the 411 on this car:
-The car comes with an optional naviagation system. I would've been nice if it were a touch screen, but this is good too.
-You won't believe how safe this car is! 7 airbags...how many does your car have?
-Push button start, i don't need to worry about sticking the key in the engine. And don't worry....the car has a sensor to make sure you have they key, so no one can steal your car.
-The wood trim makes the car look so beautiful and luxurious. Also the leather seats. Oooolala!!!
-The car is so comfortable. They're is heated seats. There is so much room for your feet and body.
-The media player is awesome!!! Check it out...7 CD players and 9 speakers!!!
-Compare to Mercedes C230 sport sedan...check out the inside. This car is so much better. Toyota just beat the Benz!
-The car is overpriced, about $38,000 plus tax ( about $4,000). I paid a total of $42,000 on it.
As you can see, this car is pretty good, if your willing to pay the price for it....but it's worth it. I can take it anywhere be sure I have everything I need in a car. I recommend you 100% to buy this car. It's a great family car and is everything you'll look for in a sedan. Toyota's logo is right, Avalon is moving forward....read morehide

- Nice ride, good MPG, great interior
- Transmission is a disaster !!
I've owned a number of Toyota products (currently have a 99 Camry and a 02 Camry). They have all been excellent vehicles except for my 2005 Avalon (which I sold last week). The transmission is a mess. It cannot select proper shift points at low speed (gears 1 & 2). I owned a 2004 Camry SE that had the same transmission and the same problem. The four Toyota dealers that I have taken the car to have been pretty useless in trying to resolve the shifting problem.
I drove a 2006 Avalon (Toyota Rental) while the dealer was trying to resolve the transmission problem and it had the same shifting problems as my 2005.
Toyota knows they have a problem but they have not arrived at a solution. If you're thinking about purchasing a 2005=2007 Avalon, be
sure to dive it long enought to check out the transmission shifting capabilities. That may spare you a lot of frustration and needless expense....read morehide

- Smooth Ride, Big Car, 6CD Changer with 9 speakers, 7 airbags
- Expensive, Passenger Seat isn't Automatic
A will reccomend this car to whoever is looking for one....although if it's too pricy you can also go with the camry (which is basically the same but less luxurious and powerful). This car itself is really great and has things other cars (including Mercedez) don't have!!!
For example, it has 7 airbags, that's a great safety feature! People always talk about how big the car is, how powerful (this car has both by the way), but this car is really safe to drive in. 7 AIRBAGS!!!! What does you current car have?
For all you music fans, here's something!!!! 6CD Changer with 9 speakers. Yep! This is the Avalon I'm talking about!!!!
Go in the car, and find out for yourself. This car is sweet....read morehide

- Smooth ride, 6 CDs, both elegant and sporty. A roomy and luxirous ride.
- The passenger seat isn't automatic (my 1999 model was), gets dirty easily
I owned a 1999 Toyota Avalon, but had a car accident, decided to buy the 2006 model. I've had it for about 2 months now and it;s a GREAT car, not perfect, but great.
~The 2006 had improved from the 1999 (mostly) but don't all cars improve? You can now play 6 CDs and it had nine speakers. The '06 is more roomy and luxiourious.
~The passenger seat wasn't automatic, my 1999 model was. (Now that's only avaliable with the limited :P) Once my sunglasses got stuck inside the sunglasses case, but that was my fault since I put it in the wrong way (it's cool that it has one, I don't need to carry my whole glasses box with me).
~My Avalon XL has all the side features....the moonroof is nice (the kids love it), the mirror is like a remote control (it opens the garage door) it also is like a cumpus, the car alarm goes off by itself (great when your carrying heavy groceries and you have no hands).
~The car looks both sporty and elegant, not all cars have that look...pretty cool.
~My 1999 model didn't have the heater/air conditioner in the back. Now, the kids don't complain that they can't feel the heat/breeze.
~Has a V6 engine and gives a smooth ride. You can go far on a gallon of gas, but it still has a powerful engine.
~The blue screen is really cool, it tells what's the temperature outside and inside.
~The driver's wheel has buttons, so you can still keep your hands on the wheel and turn on the radio or change the temperature.
~Has cloth seats, some people don't like that, but I do. It's not as easy to rip and when it a cold night, leather tends to be cold.
The car is really great! I would never trade it in!!! I don't know why other users don't like the Avalon. I once owned an Acura TL, but this car is almost the same (mostly just the leather seats and cloth seats). I'd recommend this car if you are looking for one!!!...read morehide

- Decent Fuel Economy. Regular Unleaded, Spacious, Lots of Features
- Bad Auto Transmission Shift; No Folding Mirrors/Electronic Steering Adj; AutoStart Not Useful;
The Avalon is pretty decent, but as other people have said the transmission needs to be replaced or fixed. I've brought mine in 2x already to the dealer, they reset the transmission "chips" with the hopes that it will make the shift from 1st - 2nd or 2nd - 1st more smoothly, but it hasn't. It's particularly bad when going up and down hills slowly. Living in SF, it happens alot. The Autostart function is
useless too, except to get homeless to move away from the car....read morehide

- Interior space & appearance, styling, smooth hwy rid
- Hesitates when accelerating in stop & go traffic, rattles in interior
This is actually a new 2007 model. Toyota has learned and applied nothing from customer feedback on 2005 & 2006 models. Very frustrating. Most expensive Toyota since 1985 of owning Toyotas and the worst satisfaction.
Don't buy if little nuisances are a big thing to you, like noise and rattles and poor transmission shifting. As it is designed, transmission downshifting is erratic.
Not a great value. Can do better spending less. Would recommend buying a used one if you really want an Avalon. Maybe all the noises and rattles have been fixed and the value would be better if though the transmission design would still be the same.
Suspension is too mushy at expense of handling....read morehide
