2009 Toyota Camry User Reviews
LE 5-Spd AT shown
- $10,828 - $15,422
- decent mileage, high re-sale value
- Price, cheap interior, cheap wheel covers
I looked at the 08/09 Camry and decided to pass. This car is proof that Toyota has fallen a few notches on the quality scale. I was shocked at the cheapness of the interior plastics and the stingy standard features compared to previous models of this car. It seems obvious to me that in only a couple years the substandard interior plastics and paint will begin to wear and fall apart. The performance of the car isn't all that great either. Not worth the money IMO. Never thought I would see the day when Hyundai would be making better quality cars than Toyota. A Sonata is a much better car for less money....read morehide

- Smooth quiet ride, mileage, optional stability control available
- Exterior is too plain, plastic hubcaps are cheap, rear visibility, price, trunk space, transmission
I recently rented this 2009 Camry to take a trip to one of my job sites in PA and got to log over 800 miles total. Mine was the step up LE model which looks the same as the stripper CE model with it's plastic hubcaps, no body door moldings and dull gray interior which made for a rental spec generic ride that blended in with the crowd. I saw cars just like my gray 09 everywhere. The Camry does ride fairly quiet and rides smooth enough over paved roads. Out on the highway it's soft mushy suspension does not inspire confidence around curvy highway roads such as RT 81 and I suspect that this car is setup for the blue hair set which ironically is mostly who I spotted driving them. Gas mileage varied from 31 going to PA and 32 coming back to 23 around town. I was able to get over 400 miles on a tank which isn't surprising considering how big the tank is. Trunk space seems a tad smaller than Camrys of yore and I did notice that when backing up, visibility was sometimes compromised from the kicked up rear decklid. The thing that bothered me most about this car was it's hesitant 5 speed automatic. Sometimes it shifted smooth and unobstrusive and other times it was erratic as if it didn't really want to be in that gear. I have heard numerous complaints on the Camry automatic transmission and was able to experience some of it myself. If you drove it with a heavy throttle foot it seemed better but mileage suffers when doing this. Overall if asked to choose a family sedan my pecking order would go:

I hate the way it changes. The transmission is sluggish and going uphill is horrible, especially if you let up one ounce on the accelerator.
Wish I hadn't sold my 2003 Camry LE. I loved that car!!!

- Fuel economy is way off its estimate and its not about how I drive
- Car shifts constantly on hills, had to replace breaks at 24K and recut rotors, original tires, poor
This is a much overated and over priced car. The paint job is the worst. My hood had about 300 paint chip in it . I have a new car 4 months now and there isn't 1 chip in it. The breaks were gone in 24k miles and I needed the rotors cut. Original tires were garbage, they only lasted 17K miles. Toyota has really cheapened its car. Probably as a result of much improved american cars and especially sales of Hyundai. Toyota is all about its PAST reputation and cheaping of the cars new to increase there profit margin. The Camry is a definate no....read morehide

- got 27 miles per gallon on first two tanks. Ride is smooth and confortable.
- Transmission is odd.
Automatic transmission seems to experience resistence when letting up on the gas at slower speeds of 20 to 35 mph. It is irritating.

- High resale value
- Poor transmission quality
I have just sold my 2007 Camry LE, and replaced it with the 2009 Camry LE. I have had now the car for one week, and have 150 miles on it. Two major defects have already emerged. First, the car produces a noticable jerk when first set in gear (drive mode). Second, when the car cruises at 40 mph, and the gas pedal is slightly released (to economize on gas) and the RPMs slow down to about 1,000, the car starts producing a high-pitched, very noticeable, screeching noise from the transmission. Needless to say, I am totally stunned: a brand new Toyota, that costs more than Nissan, or Honda for that matter, has such sub-standard quality. I hope the Toyota manufacturer will address this transmission problem as soon as possible. I also hope that this is not an indication of upcoming major mechanical issues....read morehide

- Sluggish, under power, hard ride, automatic transmission is horrible
In SUM - very bad car. The transmission is irresponsible, do not shifts properly, the ride is hard. Inside smells on plastic. The interior is bad - too much POOR quality plastic. I am looking to replace this car ASAP.

- Good fuel economy, standard features are great on the XLE
- Rides rough, has TONS of blind spots due to design of vehicle, small interior space than other sedan
I was disappointed when I test drove this vehicle because it rode rough, had tons of blind spots because of the way car is designed, the A-pilar looks big and blocks your views, c pilars as well. The navigation is a little dificult to use, seats are uncomfortable. If you are a tall person, you will feel as if you are sitting to high up and almost touch the ceiling with your head. It isn't that roomy. I overal just didnt like the car....read morehide
