2009 Toyota Camry

- Excellent handling/sports tuned suspension, superb brakes, 5spd AT and 4 cyl engine well mated
- Nothing major
Purchased As Used
I've been driving for over 35 years and often yearned for a family car with decent performance combined with a low cost of ownership. I didn't think it was possible to have my cake and eat it too until now.
I purchased a used '09 Toyota Camry SE new several months ago and so far I am really enjoying this vehicle.
I really appreciate the sports-tuned suspension and the stiffened chassis. The car handles really well and yet I still find the ride smooth and comfortable. The car has a very sure-footed feel around corners and on the freeway, even in heavy cross winds.
The brakes are excellent. Stops are quick and very controlled.
My vehicle is equipped with a 5 speed Automatic transmission coupled with a 4 cyl engine. Acceleration is good and downshifts are very smooth. I think the performance of the 4 cyl engine is very good and I have never felt the need for a 6 cylinder motor in this car. I certainly enjoy the fuel economy of the 4.
The interior is quite roomy and I find the driver's seat very comfortable. I prefer firm and supportive seats and that's exactly what I have found in the SE. Even after five hours of non-stop driving I did not feel any fatigue or discomfort due to the seats. The feedback from my passengers regarding the seats has been excellent.
The front air dam is a little low and susceptible to hitting higher curbs and barriers in parking lots. Perhaps it should be raised a few inches.
This is a minor point, but the sill on rear bumper should be better protected (with say a hard plastic liner) from scratches and scuffing when moving objects in and out of the trunk.
The only quality problem I have found is that the rubber seal around the drivers side window was not properly installed and as a result, there is an air leak which becomes noticeable at freeway speeds.
I will summarize by saying that I think this vehicle delivers outstanding value and I would definitely purchase another....read morehide

- Styling, Stereo, and Sunroof
- cheap material, lack of options, and weak engine
Purchased As New
The design of the car is great, but the material on the inside is very cheap. The engine is weak never experienced a car so weak. Don't buy a I4 if you like speed. It needs more options like a rearview camera. Needs bluetooth in all cars and VSC with traction control. The stereo has great power but the look of it is unappealing. The blue light looks tacky and cheap. The auxiliary input is in an awkward place and hard to reach. I do not like how the rear seat does not fold down for the SE model. There is no point in buying the LE model unless you just want a big car. Slow reaction when pressing the accelerator. The seats are rough and the fabric for the seating is like a nail filer. You can feel it exfoliate your skin. The storage compartments are easy to get things stuck and hard to get out. The plastic on the back of the front seats are cheap and gets dirty quickly....read morehide

- Nice exterior design, colors
- transmission slips, steeering/ride/tires, cheap interior
Purchased As New
We purchased our Camry last Fall and to date still have transmission slippage or lurching. The dealer has "reprogrammed" the computer several times and it still has the problem. We owned a 2001 Camry which had engine sludge problems because of too small oil return holes in the top of the engine. Now this transmission thing. Also the car need a wheel alignment because tires were wearing unevenly. Our family has owned both Toyota and other brands over the years. It seems now that Toyota is now on par with any other car maker, sorry to say. We won't be paying $28,000 plus for another Toyota.
Seating and a rattle in the dashboard area are also minuses to us. We've had the same dealer for over 10 years now the service is faltering as well. They want us to buy a service/maintenance contract. Why is that? Do they know something we don't?? My neighbor has an '09 Accord and it seems not up to par either, with harsh handling and uncomfortable seats, along with wind noise or leaks. Next time we will shop for a better buy and look at even a Ford, Chevy, or Saturn. At least the cost is less....read morehide

- Nice body styling
- transmission is "shiftless", seats uncomfortable, cheap interior
Purchased As New
I'm so angry I'm not going to elaborate too much. Transmission problems as others have stated. Hate the seats. Interior, unless you buy the top of the line model, are no better than American brand competition. I got burned on my 2001 Toyota with engine problems. Now the car costs more, is cheaper looking and feeling (on the inside), and we've moved on to 2009 with weird transmission surges or slipping. And the dealer makes excuses....read morehide

- Good on fuel.
- Ride is very rough. Transmission slips in and out
This is my first Toyota (product) 2009 camry SE. I am very very dissipointed with the ride. It is very very rough. It feels as if I am travelling on a bumpy dirt road even though I am driving on the Highway. The CD player does not paly my CD when I leave it in the car and it is cold.
I have 5500 miles on the this car and Toyota is replacing the engine mounts because of the vibrations when I am at a stop light. I am thinking of trading this car because of the rough ride....read morehide

- Nice styling, reported re-sale value.
- Transmission problems,Seats so-so, mileage not as advertised, noise
As reported by other users, the transmission slips or lurches. We've had the car back to the dealer and heard everything from it needs to break in yet (with over 6,00 miles on it?) to we have installed new transmission computer software. And the dealer wants to start charging $75 if the trouble can't be found or repeated, saying Toyota won't pay them unless a trouble is actually found. The dealer is also pushy and always trying to sell add-on service work or accessories that are not needed.
The Seats are not as comfortable as we thought they would be also. And there is wind or road noise also that wasn't noticed before. Lastly the gas mileage is poor and not near what is advertised or stated on the window sticker. 17 - 19 mpg suburban driving and 28.2 tops on a couple 200-300 mile freeway trips....read morehide
