2006 Toyota Corolla

- Awesome gas mileage, quick, excellent handling
- Gearbox and clutch take time to get used to, driving position is a bit too high
I bought this car in July 2005. I decided to upgrade from my 2004 Corolla "S". I will say that there is a world of difference from the "S" to an "XRS", anyone who says differently has not driven both and/or does not know much about performance cars. The six speed on this car is a great upgrade from the five speed "S", however drivers that are very performance oriented will want to take advantage of the quick shift kit TRD manufactures since the shifter is positioned a bit high. The clutch grabs quick, the gearbox is tight, and the sport tuned suspension and strut tower brace engineered by Yamaha make this car a winner when it comes to the twists and turns of the back roads. While this car is definetly quick and energetic, it will not smoke vehicles in the 300 HP performance bracket without a turbocharger and some serious driving skills. However, it does have excellent Toyota quality and you will be probably be the only one among your friends and neighbors with an XRS as they hard to find....read morehide

- looks good, decent fuel economy, good brakes
- terrible clutch engagement, 6 spd. is notchy, buzzy transmission, dash rattlles
I have owned several Toyotas, including a 2001 Corolla S, and the XRS is by far the worst Toyota I have ever owned! What makes this car a burden to drive is the "lurchy" clutch pedal engagement and the notchy 6 spd. trans. First gear is also too low. My 2001 S with a 5 spd. was great. I regret getting rid of that car. If you are considering buying an XRS I would test drive it along side an S model with a 5 spd. The extra horsepower that the XRS has over the S is non-existant until you reach the 7000-8200 rpm powerband. This momentary boost happens within just over a second then you are forced to shift very quickly into a higher gear before the ignition kills itself. It is very easy to shift a half a second too late and hit the 8200 rpm rev limiter, which saves your engine, but is the equivalent of turning off your car and dumping you way out of the powerband. I must say the acceleration of this car is mediocre at best. If you are looking for a fast car this is NOT it. I have been beat in races of the line by full size trucks. The XRS is supposed to do 0-60 in 7.1 seconds, but I highly doubt this even if you rev your engine and dump the clutch. The speed of this car is slow and linear. It takes time for it to rev up high into the powerband until you reach 7000 where it speeds up drastically. What most people dont realize is the power is so high in the powerband and only lasts for a second that it is really unusable unless you are racing it to redline in every gear. All I can say is do your research. I did not and am very dissapointed with this car! It is annoying to drive this car in traffic due to the low torque of the motor and having to give it a little gas while slipping the clutch to keep it from stalling. Also, if shifting quickly, it is easy to miss second gear and grab the detent between second and fourth gears. Roadholding is fair, with mild torque steer powering into corners. On straight ahead launches there is no noticeable torque steer. I think if I had more info. on this car beforehand I would seriously have considered buying a Cobalt SS, Subaru WRX, or even the new Mazdaspeed 3. If you have a little extra money I would also look at the 350Z. (2007 base model starts around $29,000 with 306 hp) This car drives great with a spirited fast reving engine and has great roadholding ability even if you are not a professional driver. I probably would have been happier even with a regular Corolla "S" model!! Anyone still looking to buy an XRS?! Mine is pristine with only 2,000 miles on it...and it's FOR SALE!!!...read morehide

- This car offers a great ride. It handles smoothly, and hugs corners like BMW, or a lexus.
- personally i feel that the drum brakes in the back are somewhat of a downfall.
The 6 speed transmission, was definetly a great choice by toyota. This car is amazing. I also like it not only for the fact that it handles smooth is reliable, and has great gas milage, but also for the fact that if i want to have a little bit of fun that i can take it down a back road and let the gears wind out....read morehide

- fuel economy
- still have a lot difference if compare to high performance car
if you own a corolla XRS and try to race with a BMW at the stop light, forget about it. don't think that 164hp is enough to create a miracle, save you gas to race with those Honda civic, may be enough. OR, save your money to buy the 2008 Toyota Supra, then think about drag race with a bimmer.

- Very good road feel with the strut on the strut towers, Great power in the high rpm limits
- Tilt steering should be access through a arm assy like behind the light arm, it is hard to use
I love this can and it it just plain fun to drivr. My first small toyota sedan was a 74 celica GT with the 22re engine and I drove it until 160000 miles and sold it. This car right away brought mt back to my younger years with how fun it is. The 1.8 power band shoud start at a lower RPM because when redlining the engine when you shift you drop out of the useful VIT and VCH modes of the engine. Mine seems to come in around 7000 to redline. I am going to do some checking and see exactly what the Toyota spec. is. The ride is stiffer than the "S" because of suspension upgrades which are very notoceable but tolarateable. It has great steering responisives and I could imagine a blast to drive on a good curvy country road. I have owned the XRS for 2 weeks and an]m not sorry at all I purchased it. I have recieved lots of complements on how sporty it looks with the spoilers and wing which is all color keyed. If you test drive one push it to redline and bang a couple of gears, you will be signing papers. Did I mention it is fun to drive!...read morehide

- Fuel economy is great, the added boost between 6,000 and 7,000. just a great car.
- High performance parts can be hard to find
I have owned an 05 XRS, since July of 05, and as of yet, it has been a fantastic car. It's sport tuned suspension, allows for great cornering, as well as the ability to take on ramps at high rates of speed. As a track car, I have found it to be quite acceptable, and this is running it bone stock. I averaged about 17 flat on the quarter mile, not great, but I have only recently gotten into racing. Performance parts may be a bit tricky to find, but they are out there. Also the slight boost you get between 6 and 7 grand, is great on the track. In all I have no complaints about this car. It offers sports car ride and performance, with sedan insurance. The price was also a big selling feature....read morehide
