We test drove this car and kept it for 2 days trying to like it. We REALLY tried to like it. We were trading out of our '01 Grand Prix, and we kept in mind that we were going from a 6-cylinder to a 4-cylinder. Even with this in mind, it was hard to get past the serious lack of pep this car has.
We were considering the Corolla Sport Special Edition. We quickly found out the word "Sport" in the name of the title basically means attractive body style and sunroof. Nothing more. When taking off from a dead stop, the car seemed to be struggling to make it out of 1st gear very sluggishly. Once you accelerate past 1st gear, it starts to take off a little faster. This was a concern for city driving. The little cars engine sounded like we had it floored when we were trying to merge into traffic safely. This car does has the "sport" suspension and low-profile tires. When driving through town at 30mph, we found a bad patch of road and the car was all over the place. It rides like a log wagon. I had a sport edition car several years back with low-profile tires and it didn't ride anywhere NEAR as choppy as this thing.
The interior is VERY basic. A touch screen radio, a heater and cruise control. A hard plastic center console, stiff cheap seats and fabric and horrible sounding speakers were also drawbacks. The car over-all feels very, very cheap. Both in performance, ride and the look and feel of the interior. Basically the only thing we liked about this car was the body style!
We then test drove a '13 Nissan Sentra and loved it! For the same price it has better acceleration, ALOT more interior options and a much smoother ride. The engine is the same size, and although it clearly isn't as powerful as a 6-cylinder, it feels more solid and peppy. The warranty is also the same with the Sentra, and it looks and FEELS like a better quality car. After driving the Sentra, there is no way I would pay $20K for the Corolla. The Sentra is now our new car!!!
