2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid User Reviews
- $10,760 - $12,880
- Economical, smooth ride with awesome styling
- I'll let you know when I find any - maybe more storage? More back seat leg room?
Purchased As Used
I've only had her a week, but I am already totally IN LOVE with my new Highlander Hybrid! I was shocked with the comfortable ride it provides, and she looks awesome on the road. The Limited model offers the bells and whistles I've been used to with my Town & Country Limited Minivan, but with MUCH better mileage. I miss a couple of the storage cubby hole areas, but will sacrifice for the great mileage. As a Soccer/Football Mom, Realtor and very active volunteer, I drive A LOT, and this new baby is my favorite car so far!!...read morehide

- great space for all your gear/decent mileage/very responsive
- mileage not what expected
I love this car...and these days no car seems to get what the sticker says for MPG. We live in the Northwest and the Hybrid will get better mileage when the weather warms up. We are getting 23/24 MPG in the city (in winter driving) and that is a lot better than any other SUV we have owned. The car handles VERY WELL. Feels like you are driving a sports car. There is little or no wind noise, the car holds a ton of gear to recreate, and I love everything about the car. It rides very smoothly and handles great in the snow. As for comfort I am over 6'0 tall and there is plenty of head room etc....read morehide

- Great navigcation and seats. Plenty of room. very quiet ride. plenty of pickup.
You can get 30 MPG in HWY driving. A recent 180 Mil trip I got exact 30 MPG. I have happy with that. After about 3400 miles I am very, very happy.

- decent MPG for SUV 4x4, nice ride, overall happy
- wish it had built in satelite radio, no navigation for price i paid?
Decent MPG for 4x4, came from chevy tahoe. Rides good, quiet, and very good acceleration. Has plenty of room. I don't feel like they are worth the $$$ they go for , but then again what car is. It does whistle sometimes? Corner of dash on passenger side has chiped some too. I have had the HH for 7 months now. I avg. 25 to 27 MPG. It does tend to get a little better MPG in warmer weather? All in all it is a nice vehicle. I feel that Toyota will improve on them in the coming years and I have had no mechanical problems at all....read morehide

- quiet and strong acceleration
- 22 MPG isn't what I bargained for, Stupid navigation screen warning
Overall, a very high quality well engineered car. We have the 2007 HH AWD with navi and 3rd seat LTD. EPA rated MPG is 31/27, but on-board computer says we're really getting 21.9 MPG. I also hate the warning screen that demands YOU AGREE to some stupid message everytime you turn the car on. Navi is overall very good, but many things are not intuitive and hard to understand what is needed....read morehide

- GREAT fuel economy - In-Dash Nav system -
- Sluggish steering - some squeaks in front end - Anti-lock brakes seem to engage hard on bumpy stops
Great vehicle, only real draw back is required trim level packages to get certain options. Ride is great for SUV and mileage is as advertised. Handled road trips of over 500 miles in length with great aplomb. Climate control system is well thought out and intuitive within the context of the dash screen and physical shut-offs available at any time. Audio System is superb - however a SIRIUS option is a must for Toyota to consider. All in all a great vehicle, and for a one-car family like mine it is an incredible help to your finances when you have visited the gas station so little you can recall each time!...read morehide

Got one of the first HH last year around this time .... drove perfect until August of this year.
Started experiencing lower gas mileage... dropped from about 29.9 to 24.9 now consistently.
ALso experienced lag in acceleration ... before if you punched the gas pedal, you would be pushed back into your seat... now it just speeds up gradually.
I never let the tank go below half... always filling 93 octane.
Also, been experiencing braking problems ... driving in traffic or coming to a complete stop fairly quickly (i.e. Stop sign), the brake engages ... lets go for a second... catches, car stops.
This didn't happen all the time, but it began happening quite frequently ... took it to toyota.
They changed the brake pads and rotors on the front ... since there was a technical bulletin on the newer model, but not mine ... they did it anways. Toyota Regional Tech drove it for a few minutes... didn't experience the problem ... obviously!
Traffic... brakes didn't work... rear-ended police car ... took it back to toyota ... they said it was something with the regenerative breaking ... but it only started happening in August.
They ran scans many times, nothing abnomral showed up, some things were on the high end of the normal range, but wouldn't tell us what exactly. NO print out.
So they took it again, toyota regional tech, drove it for 50 miles ...
"could not duplicate the problem" ... that is what their stand is. If they can not duplicate the problem, it apparently does not exist.
Driving on a service road ... 55-60 mph ... the gf says slow down ... the car starts slowing down by itself ... constantly.. kept speeding up and it kept slowing down, as if brakes were being applied... no brake lights though.
Driving another day ... same speed,... car starts braking by itself... tried engaging cruise control ... figured if it wouldn't engage it would be b/c its braking ... cruise wouldn't engage. In both cases, had to shut off car and wait ..then turned back on... drove fine.
Today i was driving the car ... going down a gradual slope ... on a turn ... braked ... the car sped up .. went from 30 mph to about 35mph, while braking ... car skided off the road, skid light came on, beeping non stop ... hit a pole... shattered my mirror and scratched the side ... car wouldn't stop ... threw it into park and finally skidded to a stop.
I have opened a case with California... still not getting anywhere with it. I figure if i get into one more accident, three times a charm i guess ... they will do something about it.
oh one more thing,... driving one day... NAV screen flashes, insert DVD... and then goes back to normal.
No mods done.

- Fun to drive, love the nav and MPG read-out. Twice the milage as my durango
- Wish i could get 30 mpg.I get 28 summer and 24 winter.No other cons
I think this is your best buy if you plan to travel much or tow a boat or something . It goes thru the mountains better than any other vehicle I've driven and it is smoother and quieter than the rav-4 we own.It has been a pleasure to own..Joe
