- Good gas mileage, roomy, easy to use radio/climate controls
- Ride is jittery, hesitant transmission, noisy engine and unsuppressed wind noise
I almost got hit making a left turn, floored it. In any other car, including my Ford Explorer V6, the transmission would've downshifted quickly and you would've had enough room to turn safely. In the Highlander, however, after starting the turn, I realized that I had to really scoot and get through. It was probably in third gear. For whatever reason, this car hates first gear, and at all times refuses to use it, even under hard acceleration. So, as I floored it, it hesitated at least half a second, presumably hovering over second gear. Then, after AT LEAST 3/4 of a second, it grabbed first gear and lurched forward, and shifted down @ around 5,000 rpm. I'm not sure why, but the car will not use first gear. this is a safety issue if you need to get out of someone's way fast. By the way I'm obviously not being biased, as this is our second Toyota. Our first was a 1994 Camry LE that was an impeccable car that never had any problems. Toyota quality has slipped greatly.
