- Understeer, handling, traction control.
Purchased As New
My wife and I bought this new in March of 2010. After driving it for a year mainly in rural central Pa I can say that I consistantly get combined mileage of about 20 mpg. I try not to set land speed records but sometimes I'm running late and that's when the power is nice to have to pass, merge, etc. The leather seting was a great value for the price tag on this vehicle. We looked at comparably equipped Chevy Traverse that did not have leather and was $2500.00 more on the MSRP. Fit and finish is nice inside and out. Low noise level at most speeds. Also it has about 20 airbags. Now onto the cons. It has worse understeer than my 1979 Ford
F-250. The trade off for a nice car like ride is poor handling and vehicle lean in the turns (not at NASCAR speeds either).
The traction control............as far as I can tell was developed by someone who has never been stuck in the snow. I was in about 8 inches of wet heavy snow and had to turned off the traction control so I make it out my driveway. Even then the SUV would slide one way or the other and the STAR safety system would apply the brakes to one or more wheels. This does not help when trying to get thru snow. Overall I am pleased with the Highlander and would recommend it. The pros outweigh the cons and I have been converted from a Big 3 guy to a Toyota guy. Now I just have to convince my wife to do the same:)...read morehide
