Purchased As New
We purchased our Base 4x4 v6 Highlander in March 2011 and now have over 3,000 miles of mixed highway/city driving. We are happy with the fuel economy given the size of the vehicle. We are getting an average of 20 mpg, with a highs of 23-25. Other options we looked at before purchasing the Highlander were the Mazda 5 and the Honda Pilot. The Mazda 5 was out once we reviewed its safety ratings at www.informedforlife.org as was the Pilot. The Pilot also received much poorer ratings on high speed braking.
(Informed for Life is a non-profit that synthesizes all the major auto safety ratings and offers an overall view.)
The Tech Package was important for us since it provides the rear back-up camera. We could have installed one ourselves, but preferred to pay a little extra for that and the other extras that come with the Tech Package.
There is no storage room when both 3rd row seats are up - that is a downside, but the car has been positive on all other counts. We did not look at minivans -- my wife works for a healthcare business where the employees drive between locations all day, and all the employees who have minivans said they did not feel safe with them driving on snow. The Highlander has a "SNOW" switch that, if I'm not mistaken, puts the car into lower gear for safer driving in snowy conditions.
