2006 Toyota Matrix
There are 9 user reviews for the 4X4 trim shown below
- Very good handling on ice and snow
- Hatchback has problems when cold, small gas tank
We had to give up our 98 RAV4 after 205,000 miles and after considering the '07 RAV4 and the '06 4wd Matrix we opted for the Matrix. I would have prefered a manual transmission, but that's just me.
So far, the the biggest plus is the handling on ice and snow. The Matrix feels solid on ice, even more so than the '98 RAV4. Gas milage has been okay--a bit less than the rated numbers. The storage behind the rear seats is good for the size of the Matrix; a 40lb propane tank fits upright.
On the down side, the hatchback does have significant problems latching in sub-zero (F) temps. The windshield wiper on the hatchback only clears a small fraction of the glass, and is close to worthless on snow. Apparently there is no useful replacement wiper (as there is for the front windshield).
After 3000 miles, this seems like a solid Toyota. Nothing fancy, but it does what we need a vehicle to do....read morehide

- PERHAPS MAKE SUN VISORS BETTER QTY WITH FLAP OVER-MIRROR COVER STANDARD ON PASSENGER-SIDE.
MATRIX ALL THAT ONE MIGHT ASK for IN AN UNDER 20,000 DOLLAR NEW CAR PURCHASE. LOOK AT STANDARD LIST OF EQUIPMENT AS WELL AS VALUE PACKED OPTIONS. SPOUSE AND I THOROUGHLY TESTED IT AT MULLER DEALER IN CLINTON, NJ. OURS IS A BRAND-NEW 4WD [AWD] MODEL AUTOMATIC TRNS. IT HAS PERFORMED VERY WELL DURING THE BREAK-IN PERIOD OF 1,000 MILES. WE'VE BEEN MANAGING OUR RESP. "BY THE OWNERS MANUAL", VARYING SPEEDS ON ALL KINDS OF ROADS,INTERSTATE NO MORE THAN 65MPH. WE ARE PLEASED AND RECOMMEND USE OF 91 OCTANE TO SUPPLANT 10:5 OR THEREABOUTS FINAL DRIVE RATIO OF OVER 4.10 IN OUR ALL-WHEEL-DRIVE WAGON. AT CURB WT. OF 2965 POUNDS, IT HAS ENOUGH PEP FOR US. - Fuel Economy, Interior Layout, Plenty of Space in Rear Cargo Area
- Could be a little quicker on the highway, light body (mountain cross winds can jerk the car)
I traded in my 88 Volvo 740 Station Wagon for this car in October. I have a Matrix XR and I truly love it. I have put 15K miles on it so far and it is doing fine. Great gas mileage. I am traveling quite a bit so this is a plus. Good interior head room and space even for the tall guys in my family. I also enjoy the flexibility of the fold down rear seats for those trips to the lumber yard or Costco. I live about 3 miles from the dealership where I bought the car so I get the car serviced there every 5K miles. This has also been very convenient for me....read morehide

- Comes in 4x4- lots of room-4 doors- a good substitute for an suv.
- My 2002 cavalier got the same gas milage as the Matrix does- The black interior can get really hot.
My first Matrix was a silver 4x4 base model- within 24 hours the car overheated and the AC wasn't working.
We thought the dealership forgot to put the fluids in the car (because there was no coolant, or windshield washer fluid) so we called the dealership and they had us bring the car in.
This was a brand new 2006 with 75 miles on it.
Apparently there were major problems and I demanded a new car because there is no way a brand new car should have such problems and if it does, I don't want it.
My previous car was a 2002 Cavalier it never once had to be serviced.
The dealership however was great and is now trying to get me a new car in my first color choice- I am using a loaner car from the dealership until my new one arrives.
Although my experience is apparently rare it was very stressful and made me second guess my choice.
However, I do love the car, the 4-wheel drive and the cargo room is really what I wanted and now I get favorite color....read morehide

- pros: love the space, drives smooth, solid feeling car
- gas mileage
would love to know why my gas tank seems to be going so fast.
brand new car and so far i've only driven 160 miles and i'm below a half a tank already..........it's my first tank of gas..this car is brand spanking new, so i'm hoping it gets better. i am even driving super slow and trying to not use the airconditioning to see actual mileage in general.
i just bought this car less than a week ago and wish i didn't get the 4 wheel drive......it must be why the gas is going quickly.
anyone else having similar feeling?...read morehide

- 27 MPG w/ 4wd, Easy to manuever in NYC, 4 adults sit comfortably, GREAT CAR !
- A little under-powered.
Bought an '06 automatic Matrix 4wd base model. 4wd models includes ABS, weather guard package, and rear window wiper - not to mention 4wd for snow and rain driving. Base models don't have the lower front and rear spoilers nor the lower side panels, so there are a few more inches of ground clearance on the base models which is better for snow driving.
Very happy with the Matrix. Four adults sit very comfortably and there's plentyof headroom. Small car so it's very easy to park in New York City and manuever around city streets. The car is quiet and has numerous storage containers (glove box, deep box under center arm-rest, storage box under transmission selector, storage box under radio with closing front door, storage box left of steering wheel and a coin holder slot above that).
In addition, the rear seats fold down (60/40 split) for added storage and there's storage space under the trunk floor (a plastic cover over the rear tire has molded storage space for items). Also, the rear window opens up seperately (without having to open the entire trunk) which makes it super-convenient for putting in and getting out smaller items.
The car is a Toyota and that basically speaks for itself. It's realiable and economical transportation, but also looks sporty and hip. I considered the Vibe-clone also, but who buys a GM car these days? The Vibe was almost same price but I didn't like clock in the radio display (the Matrix has a seperate digital clock above the radio) and wasn't thrilled with the Pontiac/GMC/Buick delaership experience.
In these crazy days of $3+ for a gallon of gas, the Matrix has been getting me a good 27 mpg overall (and that's with 4wd and mostly city driving). Though, I did better than 30 mpg on a recent highway trip to Atlantic City.
If you're considering the Matrix... stop considering and buy it. You won't be disappointed....read morehide

- fuel economy, price, safety, comfort
- no leather seat option, bland basic stereo
I traded my '98 Ford (13 mpg/$72 tank fillup) luxury laden SUV in for the '06 Matrix hoping to yield the 26-31 mpg. The first three fuel ups were a pleasant relief - $34 per fillup yielding 29mpg combined city/hwy. Yeah!
It's a sporty little car with plenty of pick up & go and is surprisingly roomy. I don't miss sitting up high as I did in the SUV since the Matrix window design offers great visibility. The seats offer enough flexibility to transport bulky items and big box shopping excursions are easily accomodated. The stereo is rather bland but adequate. One feature that I could not get with this vehicle was 'leather seats' or leather look vinyl for easy cleanup with kids. That was clearly a disappointment.
On the other hand, the convenient key fob, rear hatch window wiper, auto head lights in dark & automated door lock when shifted into drive were unexpected bonuses for this class of car....read morehide

- excellent fuel, easy to fit into small parking space, and adjustable back seats are really useful
- Matrix car made with very economical- fragile materials, it shakes in rainy and windy weather while
Overall, my experience of driving matrix is satisfactorily in city. I'm very happy with it.
