- great fuel economy
- only thing I do not like is the low cowl in front
I have a 2003 and I love it, so dependable and looks great too, I am looking to trade for a new one hopefully this year as I want a 4 wheel drive model. I live in snow and want to have the advantage of four wheel drive. I have looked at some others but I love my Matrix and can get one for less that any other model i looked at....read morehide

- great ride. drives like a little race car. very responsive
- brakes make a wierd noise now and then
We love it. we are hooked on Toyota for sure. For what we paid we sure got alot. Have had it 2 years now and no problems mechanically. It runs like a top. It never hesitates, its always up to whatever challenge we give it. We've driven it on many trips long or short and always feel like we arrive in style. It feels much roomier inside than it looks and is very comfortable to travel in. We upgraded the sound system to the 6 disc and it works great as well. We love to moonroof too. We plan on keeping it until our 12 year old gets his license and Im sure it will be a great car for him. Then we will get another Toyota. Looking forward to seeing what Toyota comes up with in the next 6 years....read morehide

- Fuel economy, turn radius, value
- anti-lock brakes not standard
Trade in a 2002 Escape for a Matrix. I like the looks of the Pontiac Vibe a little better, but after doing some research the resale and price of the Matrix was a better value. Seems to have more rear set leg room than my Escape and just enough rear storage space. The gas milage so far has been around 27 mpg on average. Power is a liitle low but it is a 4-cylinder.
Need to make the anti-lock brakes standard. I had to order the vehicle to get the safet features and the power package. The power package did include power side mirrors, which is the only thing I miss having.
Overall a good little car....read morehide

- the fuel Economy is excellent. ride is fairly tight, reasonable price
- front seat is aliitle small, a tad gutless, nothing else yet
I put my first 5K miles on the car and no problems as of yet. My eight year old loves her bluie as she has named it. I purchased mine using the COSTCO membership program and saved about 500-700 over what I negociated locally. so far an excellent small family car. gets 28-32 miles per gallon with the Automatic in the XR 2 wheel drive version. My only complaint is that I am about 6 foot tall and the arm rests on the drivers side are somewhat short and I need to use a towel on longer trips. Car is made in Fremont, California which is local for us. When I bought the car I also looked at the mazda 3 5door and the pontiac Vibe, the mazda was nice the the fuel economy was just ok. the vibe was almost the exact same car less the overhead rack, which I do wish I had, but almost 1500 more expensive. WHAT A RIP. So much for GM pricing. I guess they have to much overhead and pension costs to be cost competive....read morehide

- Good fuel economy, value, styling
- seatbelt warning
This is a basic little runabout. It has good looks, offers excellent fuel economy (for a non-hybrid), and can carry a decent amount of stuff.
It is not fancy, and the trappings are only moderate....fabric, interior plastic, etc. It's only really important shortcoming is the lack of performance. I live in a coastal community and must negotiate a lot of bridges of varying size. Depending on what you might be stuck behind, you will most often have to downshift to 4th to maintain position. That said, it doesn't cost much, and I think, you will be hard pressed to find a better overall vehicle of this size. Why would anyone buy an Pontiac Vibe? This has much better styling, and from what I've been able to determine, costs a bit less....read morehide

- Mileage, Space, Quiet ride, Less Expensive
- Drive uphill takes quite bit of effort.. Ordinary Interior
These are just the first impressions. I just bought a 06 XR 2WD.. Ride is nice.. It is a bit stiff when taking corners though.
Lots of pockets around the driver seat to put away all of your stuff.. Seats provide good back support.. Lots of space, the rear seats fold flat and you can tie down the luggage..
There is good value in this car for the concious buyer.. Space and mileage were my primary concern and I couldn't have found anything better. I would recommend a test drive if you are in the market for a mid size car and could use more space than a sedan.....read morehide

- Maneuverability, cargo space, fuel economy, great looks
- Could use more power; a little rumbly on the highway
I absolutely love this car. I live in the city and need a car that maneuvers well in parking garages and narrow streets; but sedans don't have the cargo space I want. This car is the perfect size and I absolutely love the carrying space. With a tight turning radius and short length, it's fantastic for parking in garages or tight on-street spaces. I love that the hatch glass opens for easy access to the back when I'm parked in a tight space and can't bring up the full hatch. And my skis and bike fit easily in the back, which I could never have done in my sedan. The best part is that it is simply a great looking car. I got it in Indigo Pearl (the dark blue color). This is the first car I've had that people comment on how good looking it is. I could not be happier.
The one drawback, which is not that bad, is a lack of power in the engine. I also find the car somewhat rumbly at higher speeds. I test drove the Focus, and if you are looking for a zippy and smooth ride, you should get that instead....read morehide

- Runs good especially since I drive it to college
This car is awsome I own a 2004 XRS, and it is fun to drive plus it has power so when you want to pass someone up just lower your shifter from 6 to 4 and your gone.

- Fuel Economy, Price and comfort.
- The standard features are not sufficient, noisy, in-take made of reinforced cardboard.
I used to drive a T-100 V6 which at 2.90 a gallon needed 50 bucks to fill up and has a range of about 300 miles. This car only takes 30 bucks and has a longer Range at about 400 miles. This helps me a lot since I drive about 400 miles a week. The interior is good for big guys. It would sit 4 big individuals comfortably, with enough leg room, head room in both the front and the back.
Its engine is sufficient for everyday driving. without passing 2k rpm, the car easily gets to 35-45 mph. It is light and easy to handle. on flat roads. Once in a while while driving up hill at just even 65 MPH the engine tends to be underpowered and slows down dramatically, one needs to floor it to speed back up which would kill the efficiency of the car.
I have no regrets buying this car, and I think that since it is a toyota it should last for hundreds of thousands of miles without major problems. The dealership was friendly, I paid Thousands off the sticker price and the whole transaction only took 2 hours.
I would also like to point out that The pontiac Vibe is exactly the same car, same engine and transmission (by toyota) so I would recommend that as well. Pontiacs have a somewhat "cheap looking interior" but it should have better standard features compared to the Matrix....read morehide
