- Great car overall, roomier than expected
- MPG not as good as reported, doors don't always close in the cold
I live in Alaska and so I imagine that some of the problems I am experiencing are due to our extreme cold weather. However, even in the summer, I have never gotten as good a gas mileage as is advertised for this car...quite a bit worse in fact. It is far better than my toyota tacoma I used to drive (in terms of fuel economy) but that's not saying much. Also, my doors tend not to close very well (i.e. latch on the first try) when it's below about 10 degrees...more of a nuisance than anything else.
Those two factors aside, I really like my matrix and am very happy I bought it. I haven't had a problem fitting people, dogs, gear, etc when I need to...it's very comfortable (I didn't give it 5 stars in this category due to road noise, which is pretty loud) and other than the fuel economy letting me down a bit, it does perform well. I have no problem in the ice and snow and have not had to add studded tires....read morehide

- Good fuel economy, decent interior room, comfortable
- Under-powered, noisy
Perfect car for a family of four. Very reliable. Good amount of interior space. Could use more power (though I don't know what that would do for the fuel economy). Our model has some nice touches - 6 disc CD changer, sliding moon roof, 4wd. After researching for almost six months we found this car has the most bang for the buck in its class....read morehide

- Tight steering, sexy looks, good traction, storage space, fuel economy, running lights, side airbags
- no ipod port, mud flaps not standard, somewhat noisy
My goal was 4wd, side curtain airbags, good fuel economy, with room for two large dogs. Studied all the internet sites and reviews and ultimately settled on Matrix XR. I had 3 Subaru SWs before this and bad mechanical results with 2 of them after 60,000 miles. So figured I'd go back to my college brand of Toyota.
It was a good choice. For the mid aged baby boomer looking to upgrade image, the "Trixie" is definitely a hip 4wd car compared to Subarus. Reading the car ads, these cars are definitely hot sellers and difficult to find used.
I have also been very pleased with the utility of the interior. Lots of storage space, 2nd row seats fold down easily and flat without having to remove headrests (unlike Subarus). With two large old English Sheepdogs in the back bringing half the woods back with them after walks, I appreciate the hard plastic backing on the 2nd row seats. Easy to wipe down and doesn't hold odors. Only negative is lack of port for ipods. Should be standard in this day and age. Idea of toting 6 CDs around for the 6 CD player that comes with this car is a little old fashioned.
Fuel economy has been 31 highway, about 28 in town so it is as advertised so far. Will report on winter handling later. Don't like how water drips from roof onto seats when you open door in rain....read morehide

- ROAD HOLDING, SPORTY APPEARANCE, PROVEN COROLLA-LIKE PLATFORM
- 4X4 MATRIX GASOLINE MPG CITY BUT MAKES UP PART OF DIFFERENCE ON HIGHWAY
SPOUSE AND I TOOK extensive test drive in standard MATRIX AUTOMATIC. Both of us were very pleased as to vehicle demeanor under varying road conditions, stop-go traffic an open highways.
Sold on TOYOTA BRAND even though VEHICLE Assembly-point is in our NAFTA friend CANADA manufacturing facility - CAMBRIDGE, CA.
Interior instrumentation second-to-none. All controls, driving position for us both very acceptable in a vehicle under twenty-thousand including state sales tax with options and other necessary fees. TOYOTA DOES THEIR HOMEWARK. NO NEED TO SECOND GUESS SALES NOR ENGINERING PERSONNEL.

- Practical, good gas mileage, cargo space
- can be uncomfortable for tall folks
We got a killer deal on a used 2005 Matrix 4x4 XR. It was either that or a Honda Element, but the Matrix has better fuel economy and almost as much cargo space (just a little shorter). I have a second hand business and go to a lot of garage sales and I also love to take road trips and go camping. The rear seats fold down easily and I can fit lots of stuff back there, like last weekend I hauled a dresser home. The surface is flat and made out of hard plastic, so you don't have to worry about things not fitting well, or things getting dirty. We replaced our 2003 Honda Civic with this car, and this car sits higher and is more comfortable for me. The only flaw is that it is a little uncomfortable in the drivers seat for my husband who is 6'3", his knee rests against the center console. I'm 5'10" and it fits me perfectly. I love the sun-roof also. As stated by another reviewer, the spedometer can be difficult to read during the day because it is small and orange. Other than that, I have no complaints about this car. I hope to have it for a long time. If you're looking at SUV's, consider this CUV. It has just as much or more cargo space than say a Ford Escape and gets much better fuel economy, plus the quality of a Toyota. The only thing it's lacking is clearance.. it shouldn't go off-road or in deep snow....read morehide

- FUEL EFFICIENT, ROOMY, SPORTY , VERY QUIET INSIDE
- NONE AT ALL!
I bought my 2006 Toyota Matrix XR in Indigo in NYS. I purchased this vehicle for the AWD. I wanted a car but I wanted to be able to plow through our Buffalo Snows easily and not in SUV fashion. I love that it is AWD and super fuel efficient. The noise level in this car is nill. It is sooo much quieter then my Saturn Ion 2 Quad Coupe. I know that owning this toyota and taking care of it will last me forever!...read morehide

- 4wd, smooth ride, comfort
- gas guzzler w/4wd, needs bigger brakes, auto headlights are annoying
This car has great room, comfort and the safety of 4wd. However, this car only averages 20 mpg in mixed conditions. The gas tank is very small, only about 11 gallons. I will be very lucky to get 30 mpg on the highway. The transmission is very slow when it comes to shifting. It shifts when it wants to, even if the gas pedal is to the floor. The engine also needs about 10-20 more hp to help this car get over some inclines. Braking is poor and the rotors burn/warp easily. Besides those issues, the car does not have any mechanical issues. With the 4wd, traction is excellent. Do not get this car if you live in an area where there not alot of rain or snow. I do not reccomend this car for someone who wants fuel economy or prformance. I will not buy an overated toyota again....read morehide

- Good fuel economy, easy to manuevers
- Too light, after 100 mph is not stable, the trunk is small.
After giving up my Explorer due to the fuel efficiency, it is a change to drive a matrix but I love it. It's roomy enough for my family. It is a good car as well for me to travel back and forth to work without draining my wallet.

- Gas mileage, storage, handling, height of vehicle, easy to park and manuever.
I bought this car to replace an old minivan. I needed good gas mileage and all wheel drive, but nothing large. This vehicle satisfies all my needs plus gives Toyota reliability. It seems that people just aren't aware of this model, but yet the dealer we bought from can't keep them in stock. In fact, the dealer almost sold our car between the time we bought it and when we picked it up....read morehide
