2009 Toyota Prius
- Great fuel economy (43-49),
- Prius is not stable at highway speeds and very bad during cross winds
Purchased As New
We brought the car for its great fuel economy and nothing else. The car isn't cute, the ride is not what we're used to, but we knew that. We test drove the Prius many times before buying it. But during our first long distance trip (400 miles) we experienced handling problems. The car wanted to move from side to side, I was constantly adjusting the wheel. Spoke to my local Toyota Service and corporate Customer Service, they indicated the car was "Working as designed". My wife refuses to use the Pruis for long distance highway driving....read morehide

- gas mileage
- most everything else
Purchased As New
I bought this car because I wanted to be more 'green'. At first it was fun, then the computer screen got really annoying - I'd be searching around trying to find the right screen while I was driving and almost getting into accidents. At night it was too bright, and finding the right screen to tone it down in the dark was almost impossible. I live in the far north and we get lots of snow. This is NOT a good snow car. The ABS brakes kicked in everytime I touched the brake pedal when the roads were just a little icy, and when the roads were just moderately bad, I fishtailed around way too much. But the icing on the cake was when I held my hand up against the heater vent in the winter to warm it and my palm just touched the start button - the engine just shut down. I was going 60 mph on a highway and it just shut off. The steering locked up and I had to force the car over to the shoulder. That did it! I traded it in for a good old American made SUV that I love....read morehide

- capable of amazing gas mileage, 38@95, 42@80, 46@70 and 65@50mph. So, 42mpg = u r driving too fast.
- speedo only has 3 digits. If the 2003 sits more than 4or5 days the big battery is too low, bummer.

I own two, an '03 & '08. The 2003 has 110,000+ miles and just installed 3rd set of tires, OK, that's normal but the rest is amazing. Let's see, oil changes-yes, replace brakes-no, clutch-no, alignment-yes, 1 time, drivetrain work of any kind-no -zero -zip, a/c work-no, headlight lens fogged over-yes-polished out 1 time. Humm, oh yea-did replace the wiper blades - $20.00. Rolling average for gas mileage after 110,000miles = 46.9, best 1,000mile rolling average 51.9. rolling average for last 907miles = 48.1. Amazing car-yes. About filters, both the cabin filter and engine air filter can be cleaned with compressed air many times, as a matter of fact, I have found that the cabin air filter is made of fiberglass and can be cleaned very nicely in the kitchen sink with windex and sink sprayer. That is almost zero dollars. The 2008 has about 24,000miles and is even better. It clearly gets better gas mileage so far and is much larger inside and rides way smoother. On both cars you will need a digital caliper to measure brake wear. It looks like the brakes are going to last at least 300,000miles. I would love to hear if anyone has had a brake job yet. Amazing cars - needs bigger battery and boost from solar or plug-in. I have seen what it takes to get really good gas mileage and if you drive a prius and get 40 to 42 mile per gallon then without a doubt you are driving too fast. Don't drive it like a V8... Try checking the screen sometimes - drive with the battery either charging or discharging and use the cruise control every chance you get... Your gas mileage WILL go up....read morehide

- gas milage
- Ride is rough.
Purchased As Used
Purchased a 2007 Prius for increased gas milage and it gets v/g mpg, approx 47 on trips. Took it to Myrtle Beach for golfing trip approx 485 miles and it was very uncomfortable and we were stiff as a board upon arriving. Wish I would have purchased an Accord or Fusion as they both have better rides. Love the neat dashboard graphics with all the bells and whisles. May like it better when the fuel returns to $4, it's $1.75 and rising. It is predicted to be $2.50 by summer in this area. Excellent car for in-town driving....read morehide
