Bought the RAV4 in March and have about 9000 miles on it. I'm really impressed with the gas mileage, as I'm AVERAGING 31 MPG, which is what the highway rating is. I've got it up to 38 MPG on a couple of days (1/2 city, 1/2 highway miles). In very congested driving with lots of traffic lights I'll get about 26 MPG.
I'm also impressed with its performance. I have no problems getting enough power from the 4-cylinder to get on the highway. The vehicle handles very confidently for an SUV and brakes well. I was a Honda owner past 3 vehicles, but the CR-V I tested was noisier and handling did not feel secure at higher speeds. The RAV4 seats were much more comfortable for my back than the CR-V. The ride is bumpier than my Accords (it is an SUV after all), but I don't find it as annoying as some other reviewers.
Where Toyota is lacking is in the interior. Though large and comfortable there are no little storage areas for things like loose change or eyeglass cases. Other SUVs like the CR-V are full of little cubby holes to store things; the RAV just has the little middle compartment between the front seats. Also, the controls for the stereo and A/C are complicated and hard to get used to. That needs improvement.
