- high seats, good for parking & driving in city, excellent highway mileage, looks, storage
- minimal safety features in base model
I bought my manual Yaris liftback a year ago and have put a little over 7k miles on it. My ride to work is 8m each way through 20 stoplight intersections. I get about 30mpg on that. But on the highway, I easily get 40mpg. All in all, it costs me an average of $2/day to drive. It would cost me $7.15/day and an extra hour to take the available public transportation option. I love that it's so easy for me to manage my daily *stuff* - backpack, purse, ipod, ipod cable, pens, notebooks, tissues, sports bars, chapstick, mints, sunglasses, water bottles, coffee, boots, gym bag, groceries, etc. as there's a built-in place for everything. With the seat down, there's enough room for my bike on weekends. I've only had one weird thing happen - a cardboard coupon flew out from the back of one of the glove compartments into the heating fan & made this flipping sound. It cost me about $36 to get it out. Fortunately there are 2 other compartments, so I have options. I've never gotten stuck in the snow since the car is so light it kind of rides over the surface like a boat. And in a marathon 3.5 hour snowy gridlocked commute recently while other people were having to get out to clear the ice off their windshield wipers, the Yaris wipers never iced over. Couldn't be more pleased with it. One more thing - I bumped into the back of another car during a traffic jam and there was no mark on either car - the low impact front really worked I guess. Otherwise, I try to drive as safely as I can keeping in mind that there are no side airbags. But knock on wood I've never been in a serious accident and usually only drive well-known routes. I hope I can keep driving this car until we run out of oil. Or find some better fuel or whatever.
