These cars are hard to come by equipped as you would like, because of the way toyota equally distributes them to the dealers. The drive train is the same in all models to my knowledge, just depends on the bells and whistles you want on the car as they go up to V. Locate one equipped as you wish and I hope you like the color.
If you are considering towing even a small trailer, this isnt the car for you. I don't even think they make a hitch for it and I am sure it would wipe away your warranty if you found one.
First purchased my gas mileage was terrible. The dealers recommendation,, check the tire pressure. He was right. The car calls for 35 and the front tires were about 25. Corrected that. I would consider myself a "easy" driver. dont need to be in anything but the economy mode and dont need to get up to speed as quickly as the cars next to me. I have gotten as high as 45 MPG on one tank that was basicly cruse type driving at about between 40- 55 MPH. Light traffic. Just filled up yesterday it was a combo tank, interstate and local, 43 MPG. I had one tank, interstate only and got 40 MPG. Speeds were between 70 and 75 average on that trip and for some short stretches just under 80. Didnt want to get run over. Started using a calculator rather then trusting what the car said I was getting per tank and have found it between 3 to 5 gallons lower per tank. Still think the car does better then the competitions hybrids, Toyota has been up on it longer then the others. 40 miles per gallon at 80 still isnt too bad, but its not 50.
The other problem I see is the steering wheel. Very uncomfortable for long trips. Too hard a material.
When I went to buy the car from my local dealer I saw he had added thousands to the MSRP because the car was so popular. I live in St. Pete and should of done a lot more comparing before purchase. I didn't do too badly, but probably should of waited for a car equipped as I wanted, a V. Instead of a III with nav even though the dealer put in a leather interior.
The nav system isnt accurate as for street addresses I live at 139 and it shows 127. Makes it hard to find places in the dark. There isnt even a 127 on my street....
The feedback I have gotten from the dealer is that I am doing well for gas mileage. Even if i am not getting the numbers. As for the nav, they did try changing out the disk, didnt help. But they push that off on the folks who made the nav disk. Its bad when a $200.00 system that plugs in is more accurate then a $2000.00 system that is built in. I am hoping there will be software upgrades for the mileage. Hoping the nav folks issue us a more acurate dvd at their cost. I have heard how much the upgrades cost, but dont know if that will even be worth it....read morehide

Sluggish acceleration takes a bit getting used to, but its NOT a sports car. All in all, I love this car. Great gas mileage. Really room and comfy inside, just need to get the seat, mirrors etc set up the way you like it.

The Prius is a very nice car, that just happens to get 50 miles to the gallon. It would be worth the money even if it only got 30. It is also the quietest car I have ever driven. Here are just some of the extras that the Prius comes with standard; keyless entry and push-button start, heated outside rear-view mirrors, cruise control, aux-input jack, six speakers, steering wheel mounted audio & climate controls, automated climate control, driver & passenger illuminated vanity mirrors, center console storage compartment, and much more. 300,000 sold and only 117 complaints about the brakes. My Prius's brakes seem fine, and even if they weren't I know Toyota would take care of them. Funny thing is that the Ford Fusion has had the same concerns about their brakes, but for some reason the press doesn't go after them. I think this is just another example of the American media looking to bring down the top dog....read morehide

I rented this car for a ski trip. I must say that the cargo room was great. It fit two pair of skis, boots, bags, and more with no problem. The car was also very quiet, in fact when we would turn it on it was hard to tell if the car was even running or not. We averaged 40mpg and this was highway driving over Utah mountains, so I was very pleased with the gas bill. Only used 9 gallons and drove over 400 mi.
However, this car has no get up and go. I didn't enjoy merging onto busy streets in Salt Lake City because you'd hit the gas pedal and the car would just limp forward. Not so helpful when trying to cross 4 lanes of traffic from a gas station. I guess I'm used to the regular gas motor where there's more umph, I dunno? I also found the dashboard hard to use. For the life of me, I couldn't figure out how to switch the heat from the dash to my feet. Why they don't have a manual knob like everyone else is beyond me. There's no knob to switch the a/c & heat from defrost, feet, a/c, etc ....
I thought the car was a let down from everything I've heard. It gets great MPG but Toyota is trying to hard to impress with the electrontic dash that proves to be a headache and I question the safety of a car that can't merge easily into steady moving traffic....read morehide

had a 2008 prius it got 52 to 60 mpg, the 2009 I now have gets 42mpg. Took it to the dealer, they said they don't know why it gets less miles and that they had three other complaints that morning also,on the same thing.I have had this last car for a year so its not something new and not the winter gas. Be aware they won't make it right!...read morehide

seats, blind spots, Toyota's non caring attitude. The car has been in for the same rattles five times. Numerous phone calls and emails to Toyota. Toyota's response - the car is "normal", we are not going to do anything, go to arbitration. Trading the car in for a Honda Insight.

I CANNOT BEGIN TO SAY HOW BAD THIS CAR IS. ALWAYS BACK AT THE DEALER (FOR AN AVERAGE WEEK DURATION). IF IS ISN'T USED EVERYDAY, IT GOES DEAD. WHEN IT BREAKS, IT HAS TO GO BACK TO THE DEALER (EXPENSIVE AND TIME CONSUMING). CAN'T GET RID OF IT (RESALE IS POOR). THE DEFROSTERS ARE USELESS (AT LEAST IN CHICAGO). ALL PARTS HAVE TO COME FROM THE DEALER (THEY CHARGE WHATEVER THEY FEEL LIKE). I HEAR THE "BIG" HYBRIDS ARE EVEN WORSE. I THINK THAT OWNERS ARE AFRAID TO TELL THE TRUTH ABOUT THESE CARS. WE ARE STUCK WITH THEM, AND WILL NEED TO GET OUT OF THEM....read morehide

Getting over 50 mpg. Great looking. Rattles like a cheap car. Returned to dealer 5 times for same rattles. Dealer can not correct. Called Toyota and was told it was normal. Look at the Honda Insight instead.

Toyota Prius is THE BIG LIE. Sure it gets great milage and has that "green look to it, but thats where the good stuff ends. Wait till it snows a bit one day or the road gets a bit slick... good night!!! It will not kick into gas mode and the car won't take an incline of 2 degrees. After being stuck in my daughters driveway about 4 times and down mildly inclined side streets on several occaisions, I decided to give the Prius its walking papers. Oh and here is the good part. When I went to trdae it in for a real car, the Audi A 4, what 8 months and 12Kmiles ago was a $25,000 car, with no scratches, dents and being well maintained NOW HAD A BOOK VALUE FOR A MERE $15,900. I guess it did not maintain its value at all.
So don't be fooled by the big lie, but don't believe me, take one out for a test drive in a mild snow storm and see where it gets ya....read morehide
