I bought the Yaris as my first car. Definitely not the first that I have driven, it was surprising how easily I settled into this car. The engine is quite responsive and speed builds up quickly if you are not monitoring the speedometer. I have the 1.3 engine, right hand driver version (I am not in the US) and my only problem is that is takes too long to adjust when climbing steep hills. Other than that the car is worth every cent....read morehide

I bought a 2007 Toyota Yaris 3 door hatchback with power mirrors, power locks, power windows and winter package. I had to wait a day to get the package I wanted in my second color choice that I wanted. Best 4 wheel designed car I have owned or have ever seen. Fully loaded with personal items to the roof, the Yaris got 35 mpg highway in the Interstate. My Yaris even has duel front wheel drive, which managed to pull me part way up my driveway with 4 inches of snow covered with 1/2 of ice on the driveway. Love the fact that the Yaris has 4 cubby holes and 2 fold out cup holders. The entrance to my driveway has a 30 degree up hill slope. After driving the Yaris for more than a year, I traded in my Ford Ranger 4.0L motor, which get 20 mpg highway, for a second used 2007 Toyota Yaris 3 door hatchback. I now have two car payments totaling $480 a month. That is now much I love my Yaris 3 door hatchback...read morehide

We bought this car new last December, and I couldn't be happier with it. No problems so far whatsoever. We have about 5,700 miles on it, and about 1,800 of those came from one long road trip. The fuel economy with this car is excellent, especially for a non-hybrid. It is the only car for the 2 of us. I drive it to work 5 days a week and it's used for all our errands/shopping trips - we only need to fill it up about every 3 weeks, and that is entirely from city driving. I haven't bothered calculating my actual miles per gallon yet.
Don't expect much power from this car. You get the great fuel economy in return for a pretty weak engine. For me, the power/acceleration is adequate, but if you have a lead foot you may not like it. As with just about all 4 cylinder cars, acceleration really suffers when the a/c is running. You definitely notice that with this car, and it is enough for me to list as my only con.
Overall, I am extremely happy with the value of this car. You get a lot of bang for your buck, and you will save even more with the great fuel economy!...read morehide

I think it depends on who drives it. Hubby kills the shift when starting out while I don't. Hubby averages 37 mpg while I get 40 average. I can take it up a 20% San Francisco grade just fine and he can't. He oversteers, I don't. I love it, he doesn't. He prefers his big Tundra, I don't. As to the seats, we added sheepskin front covers (can't put covers on the sides thanks to the airbags) so they're very comfy. The 3 glove boxes are quite handy. Being typically slow drivers, we pretty much ignore the speedometer anyway in any car, but thats still a bit funky to us. Yes, its a bit noisy inside, but my son and I hooked up his mp3 and listened to it all the way from San Fran to Salt Lake to Vegas to LA. BTW it "only" got 38 mpg at 85 mph....read morehide

I just purchased this car two days ago, and I like it the more I drive it. The manual is very easy to drive, and for a college student this is the perfect car to get around in a big city. The car moves around quickly, and it's so short it will fit in most parking spots. If you're looking for an inexpensive, fuel efficient, fun car, this is it!...read morehide

If you are looking for a car thats good on gas (I get 35+ on every tank) easy to drive, and very user friendly, this is for you! I went from spending a few hundred a month on gas in my SUV, to spending 20-40 bucks with my yaris. This car looks small, but trust me, its big inside! I fit 4 people with great leg room left for all. it can fit 5, but I haven't had the chance to. I have my sub in the trunk, and still have room for when I get food etc. If I need more room, I can always lay the back seat down and I got the same room as in my SUV! For a small car, it is pritty safe. I've seen a few of these wrecked, and tho if you get hard, it will get totalled... you will come out safe and sound!
I didn't really care for the audio system it came with. For most people its liveable. But I spent some bucks and got it fully decked out. (if you spend the few hundred to sound dampen the car - its worth it!)
Its not the most manly car (I got a few laughs cause im 24/m ) but once they are in it, they love it. so its all good. They aren't the one paying for my car/ gas / insurance!
Did I also say I valet park in las vegas? so i've driven basicly every car out there that is to be driven. and for a car under 20k, its the best out! Its very very reliable.
I bought mine used with 4k miles on it. (so basicly new) for 12,400 after tax... and its fully loaded. Sold my SUV for 8k.. so for 4,400.. I got a new car.. and im happy to know, it will pay itself off in under 2 years.
They also hold their value extremely well, and it just makes me laugh, knowing, when gas prices go back up, so will my car's value....read morehide

We Bought our Toyota Yaris on April 3rd, 2009. Today is 5-21-09. and we have put 3020 miles on it already. It is the best running car we have owned, handles ever so wonderful. We bought it fully loaded with the power package and cruise control. Our last car was a 2001Toyota Corrolla and we put 193,000 miles on it. We had one major accident with it and had to keep putting new tires on it. Thats why we finally parted with it. We had a Toyota truck and put 300,000 on it before we gave it to our son. Never had any problems with it except the usual things tires, brakes etc. My son keep it 1 year and traded it in on a new one. What can I say, it keeps on ticking like no other automobile. Maybe American Automobile makers ought to take a hint!!....read morehide

I'm not a car expert or anything, so I'm writing this from the viewpoint of a relatively normal person. I bought my liftback automatic 2 years ago in 2007.
I'm a tall guy (6' 4") and fit pretty comfortably in the driver's seat. I think if I were any taller it wouldn't work! It would be nice if you could lower the seat in addition to moving it back and forth, though. The display panel is pretty minimal but it has everything you need. The windshield is nice and large you so you can see where you're going with no troubles. I don't know if the Yaris has a good turning radius but I've been able to make some pretty tight turns and move it into places that would have been impossible with my SUV. Maybe the snub nose helps you avoid running into things? My apartment garage has all kinds of pillars to avoid and I can't imagine trying to get a Hummer in there!
The mileage is OK. My roommate's MINI seems to get better mileage as well as my girlfriend's Civic. I get worse than stated mileage in the city but better than stated on the highway, so go figure. I keep pretty obessive stats and have found that my mileage has gone down a little from when I first got it, but only by 2-4 MPG's.
My friends fit pretty comfortably in the back seats (none are as tall as me). They're pretty nice in that they also recline back! They're much much more comfortable than my roommate's MINI. I've been in the back of both and much prefer the Yaris. The "trunk" space is OK. Obviously there's not a lot of it, but I'm able fit my groveries back there pretty easily. You can always fold the rear seats down to fit more stuff or some pretty large objects.
I like the fact there are 3 glove compartments and a couple of other small spaces to put stuff. There are also cupholders galore!
The handling is good enough for me. I don't feel unsafe on the streets or the highway. I'd obviously lose in a drag race against anything other than Geo Metro, but it has enough power for my needs. :)
On the highways, the noise becomes a bit loud. It's kind of annoying to have to turn up the volume on the radio so loud. The ride isn't as smooth as Lincoln but it's OK for my needs. I've made some pretty long drives and felt comfortable at the end.
To sum up, I think this is a great car if you live in a city and parking is at a premium. The mileage is OK for the size, but still pretty good. Lots of storage space for a small car. It's small, cute, and performs well....read morehide
