2005 Volkswagen Golf User Reviews
GL 2.0 Sedan shown
- $4,310 - $6,747
the handling is good, gas mileage is also acceptable, the look can be improved and i believe if they make the car a little more heavier than it is right now, the handling will improve, but i am a bio mager, what do i know about engineering.

- It's a cute car
- Everything else
I have had problems with the fuel pump, gass seeping, the seals, a coolant leak, a flaw in the paint, and now I am getting condensation on the inside of the car. After nine months I am taking the loss and trading it in for something a better I hope. Also the MPG I was only getting about 27 not the 34 on the tag and not the 40+ the dealer was telling me to expect....read morehide

- Standard features, fuel economy, style
- Slow in traffic, beige interior
LOVE my 03' Golf GL (2 door/automatic). With a baby on the way, I plan to get an 05' 4 door when my lease comes up this year. Payments are awesome and you get MANY standard features on the base model. NEVER BEEN IN THE SHOP in the past 2.5 years!!! (Routine maintenance only.) Would like to have a little more power to get out in traffic but overall it does fine. The beige interior is tough to maintain -- lots of scuff marks inside the door from getting in/out and the cloth seats/armrests show dirt easily. I'll definitely get black interior on the next one. I HIGHLY recommend this car to anyone considering it!...read morehide

- Great gas mileage, fun to drive
- Not a lot of available option from the dealer
So far I like the Golf. With the Turbo Diesel, you can have a lead foot and still enjoy the great gas mileage. I drive 70 miles round trip to and from work, so going from my truck (16 mpg) to the golf (averaging 45 mpg), I visit the pump a lot less. When driving this car, it is hard to believe that it only has 100 hp. Surprisingly smooth ride for a small vehicle. Cabin noise is minimal. I test drove many other vehicles (Mini Cooper S, Civic, Neon, and hybrids) before coming back to the Golf. Not to mention the cost for diesel fuel where I live stays between the cost for 85 and 87 octane. Miles per gallon is fairly close to the hybrids I looked at, but the Golf outperformed when it came to acceleration....read morehide

- Good fuel economy when it's not in the shop
DON'T BUY A TDI! My TDI has been in the shop 7 times (over 50 days) since I've purchased the vehicle for a mass air flow sensor failure. The Watertown NY dealer, FX Caprara, has been uncooperative and VW keeps making excuses. I'm going to file a Lemon Law complaint and will never buy another VW....read morehide

- fuel economy, tight steering, great handling, gratifying manual transmission
- revs really high on highway (loud), hard to see radio controls when driving
This car is my first car and I love it. The cons: It took a while to get used to because the seats are hard and they hurt at first. The car is also light, and therefore in the snow, it may not be the best thing to drive (but it nevertheless is still fun). When driving, its difficult to locate the radio buttons, and often the headlights and brake lights burn out quickly (my first brake light went out about 2 minutes after I left the dealership, so I had to return for them to replace it). On the highway, it revs at around 4000 rpms when going 80 mph. So it's pretty loud, but just crank of the stereo and you won't even notice.
The pros: The heated seats warm up quickly and also heat your back. The steering is very responsive and the handling on the car is tight. Driving a manual transmission on this car brings a smile to face every time I change gears. I'm also getting excellent gas mileage (anywhere between 25-31 mpg), and surprisingly, there is plenty of room in the back "trunk" of this hatch. The monsoon sound system makes you feel like you're listening to the music live.
Overall, I highly recommend the VW Golf to anyone who wants an obedient, responsive car....read morehide
