Purchased As New
I bought my VW Golf TDI in July. I was looking for a small car that would fit my 6'2 height. I was also looking into something fuel efficient for my 30 mile commute into work. I looked at hybrids and didn't like the way the engines felt--wimpy. I also checked on the new fuel efficient cars like the '12 Focus. I was disappointed and being a Ford guy, I thought I would love it. I then heard about VW's TDI engines, saw the Golf, and was sold. After test driving the TDI with its torquey engine, and heard about its fuel economy I had to have one. I am coming from a Ford Taurus so most 4 bangers felt disappointingly different. Not so with the Diesel engine. It is powerful and responsive when you need it and it delivers great fuel economy. I have been averaging 48 mpg. Granted I have been very mindful of my speed and acceleration to get that and I drive 25 miles of freeway. However, even when I am driving around town, I average 33-35 mpg. Much better than I expected. We have put more than 5000 miles on it so far. I love driving it.
As a perk, my wife and I have been using this car a family car (family of 5). Our other vehicle is a Montana Mini Van. We have taken this on three short hotel stay vacations. We were all comfortable minus an occasional push or shove in the back. You have to pack lighter, but it works. We also have used this car as a weekend vehicle over the van for obvious fuel reason (Golf-48mpg Van-20-22 mpg). You be the judge. The kids prefer it. It can try your patience with the two door, but the seats easily move up and return to their same position. Once the kids figured it out, it was no problem. I also prefer the two door as this is primarily a commuter car for one person.
I also have found that diesel prices have been about 10% more, but the rewards of the engine pay for themselves. I also have found with the correct search tools you can hunt out a cheap diesel price and you don't have to rush to find it because the fuel economy is so good.
Last comment: The VW Golf TDI feels substantial. I don't feel like I moved into an entry level model. The European auto makers don't necessarily associate small cars as entry level cars and it shows with all the bells and whistles and the interior touches. With this in mind I don't mind the fact that I paid a heftier price tag for my small car.
I have been a Ford man for a long time. I am sold on VW and the TDI Golf.
