I have been driving my 2012 Golf TDi 6-speed manual since late September 2011 and it has averaged 38.56 MPG. It has been used on a combination of city/highway driving. On my first highway only trip I was able to average 46.2 MPG over a 950 miles. I have 22,000 miles in my first 10 months and can't be happier. If you feel the price is too high, try finding a pre-owned Golf TDi 6-speed or automatic (Certified or not) with less than 100,000 miles. Good luck, because they are keeing it if the own it! I will have mine until it dies like all other true diesel fans. VW has hit a Grand Slam with this car in all areas. Including safety which was my #1 priority when looking for my diesel. All other reasons for buying the TDi were secondary, but finish at the top along with safety. I would tell all serious diesel (and HYBRID) buyers to drive it and realize there is nothing better (even in a Hybrid). The cost of Diesel fuel has done nothing to my overall economy because it is beating my last car by 18 MPG or 234 miles per tank and it was said to be a good fuel economy car at 20.5 MPG. I am actually spending less by far!
