- Looks great. Drives great, when it works. People ask about it all the time.
- Suspect DSG transmission
Purchased As New
Put simply, I loved this car until the day it started jerking/lurching from a dead stop (both in drive and reverse). It started happening about six months after I had the car. I only have 15,000 miles on it now, and it has been a continual problem, particularly when the weather is warm and when the engine is warm.
This is not an uncommon problem according to VW enthusiast sites like VW Vortex. The solution, apparently, is the replacement of the "mechatronic" unit, but since my dealership has been "unable to recreate the problem," VW has refused to replace the mechanism, and I'm looking at having to stoop to buying a Honda or Mazda.
It's a shame because everything I read raved about the GTI's DSG transmission. It has won a number of accolades, and I must say, I loved my 2001 VW Jetta.
A lot of people aren't having this problem, so you may be fine. And if you are, great. Enjoy the ride. But if you get a bum one, good luck getting it fixed.
