It has been around 6000 miles already since I got this car. This is my second GTI, after the previous model, which I purchased in 2006. If anyone does not know, but this car and the engine in this car were selected, for several years in a row, as the best car of the year and the best engine in it?s class of the year in the whole world. There must have been a reason for this decision and when I hear people complain about low clearance, hard ride and not enough room then these people should have considered a completely different car in the beginning.
There are enough articles online about ride and performance character of this car so I?ll skip this part but instead, I?d like to touch upon a subject of reliability. I keep finding articles about constant electrical, engine and overall problems related to this car or any other product by VW. As I mentioned above, this is my second GTI and I had only one small computer glitch throughout the whole time of ownership. The problem was repaired during the regular oil change dealership visit and there were NO problems after the computer reset. I still don?t understand where the stories about unreliable VW come from, when I look around I see many old VWs on a road, many of my friends drive VW cars and none has yet experienced major problems with them, but all car consumer websites report reliability below average.
My advise to you, if you are thinking about buying or leasing this car, ask people who owned or still own a VW, and see if they like this car or if they would drive something else instead. Often, data are misleading due to the source. Many consumers tend to report about their car only if problem occurs but choose stay silent when happy with the purchase. There is enough info on that behavior online. Also, keep in mind that VW golf is the most selling car in the world. In North America we get almost the same car as Europe gets. Except for the few features we are missing it still has T-FSI engine and the same electronics. So my guess is that, there is a problem with the American consumer but not the car :-)...read morehide

I test drove a 2010 Mazdaspeed3, Wrx, and a Genesis coupe V6 before purchasing my GTI. I really like the other three but, none of them had the all around package that the GTI offers. The other three had the power advantage over the GTI but I was never impressed with their interior or ride quality. The mazdaspeed3 was quick and nimble, but I REALLY didn't like the exterior. The Wrx was close to taking the cake but the interior was to dull and cheap. The Genesis was definitely the best looking and it was quick, but never felt very refined and its a Hyundai (not a bad thing but nothing to be proud of either). Overall I am very satisfied with my purchase and this car is really fun to drive even after 6 months I still look for reasons drive the car somewhere. I fell in love with the interior on this car. The Interior is top notch and the steering wheel looks and feels amazing. the Dynaudio upgrade is definitely worth the extra, it sounds great. As for reliability I have not experience any major issues but there has been an annoying rattle on the driver side window which sounds like the window is loose. If power is what your looking for go with the WRX, but if you want an all around sporty package with good looks and class go with the GTI....read morehide

This is a fun car if you don't mind a slightly harsh ride and the front wheel drive. The car can be tossed around quite well with the DSG transmission in the manual mode. However, don't even try to push the redline as the trans will not allow this. Recent reports suggest that these are harder to come by than normal. They are on the lot at most dealers, but you will have to settle for whatever equipment it happens to come with. As usual, there already are many after-market items which can be added to individualize your ride....read morehide

I've always loved VW's...especially the GTI. I bought an 08 GTI and loved it. HOWEVER, this car was so darn high maintenance, I eventually had to trade it in. It was always in the shop!
I hope all VW's aren't like this.
I think the main problem is that I live in Chicago. The GTI is too sporty for everyday use. With all the potholes, I cracked my intercooler, got 12 flats, and 7 bent rims. The 18inch rims look nice on the car...but they're not good for everyday use.
In the city, this car sucked up plenty of gas! I averaged around 18 miles per gallon. I still love the car... but hate it's reliability....read morehide
