I'm at about 33,000 miles and am still in love with this car. Not one mechanical problem whatsoever. Smooth shifting (6-speed manual), excellent acceleration (especially on the highway). The interior is way beyond any other car in its class. Despite appearances, there is plenty of cargo space. I drove the Subaru Impreza Outback Sport and the Mitsubishi Ralliart Sport before driving the GTI, and neither one came close. - Acceleration, handling and legroom
- Durability, wet road traction

When I bought my VW GTI three years ago I thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread (and said so on Yahoo Autos). The only thing I wished it had was AWD like my two previous cars (Subarus). Having lived with the car for 3 1/2 years and 100K+ miles, I have a little different perspective. The dealership itself has been lukewarm to my problems. I would say if you feel like you have to have this car - and it has alot going for it in cheap performance - BY ALL MEANS sign up for the 100,000 mile extended warranty and factor it into the cost of the car. Otherwise, figure on trading it in at 2 to 3 years before more problems crop up....read morehide
