Purchased As New
I've had two Chrysler products and a Honda in Japan, the Chrysler products were terrible (from the 90s), and the Honda was great, very low maintenance. But by far the best car out of all of them has been my beloved college car, the 2000 Volkswagen Jetta. Wow! What a great value. German engineering for less than $20,000.
I still drive it now, as it is all paid for it saves me a bunch of cash if I had to make monthly payments... and simply keeps on running. It is now 10 years old, it has 155,000 miles and counting... and it keeps going. A tune up once in a while, change the oil, replace the windshield wiper blades, change the brakes, rotate the tires and replace the battery every two years or so and it keeps going like the Energizer Bunny.
In my case, I've lived in South Florida, so that car had been baking under the hot Florida sun for its first 6 years, with the salt and humidity of the Atlantic and Everglades... then I lived in Wisconsin for 4 years, where the car sat buried under inches and sometimes feet of snow, at freezing and sometimes sub-zero temperatures for months-at-a-time... and it kept turning on and driving.
Amazing little car.
Now, I'm starting a family, I have a career that is taking me to live in Hawaii for the next few years... and I'm taking the Jetta along. I almost regard this car as part of the family. It will probably finish its days in Hawaii... after having started its life in South Florida... not a bad way to go.
But for right now, the car is still driving me around with minimum maintenance... and I just love it. I'm also discovering that by living within one's means, by having a VW instead of a BMW for instance, I can afford to travel the world with my family... that's TRUE luxury in my book.
Thank you Volkswagen, or should I say: Danke shoen....read morehide
