- Looks Great! Good brakes, steering, power and comfort.
- The seat belt and door open(ding ding...) Little room in the back seats.
I really like the car I'm at 7715 miles and just waiting for the next oil change and tire rotation. I tried the APR 1 bar chip for 6 hours and I think I;m going to get it. Driving out the I was getting 25 mpg and on the way back home with the APR 1 bar program I was getting 30 mpg. That was even with a little lets see what she can do driving. This is my first VW. I was a little nervous at first but its a really good car. I went with the Blue Lagoon. I ave. about 23 mpg. This is a daily driven car. About 30 miles a day. The car is Great all around. The car does have a lower stance and drive ways take a little more planning to dive into and I'm always looking out for road debris. This is also the best bang for the buck!! If you were to buy a regular Jetta and put this stuff on your self it would be like close to 30k when your done. Another thing if something happens the Insurance company will cover it because its all stock!!...read morehide

- Good fuel economoy, lots of power, awesome looks, great sound system
- Small back seat, brake problem in begining, fuel gauge was off when I got it:(
WOW. I am thoroughly please with this car. I traded a Golf GLS for it and am glad I did. Every time I go out, I get looked at, I mean, who couldn't resist 18" rims, wrapped in Goodyear top of the line performance tires, and those red brake calipers and oversized disks. The brake system is actually from the Audi TT, 12.3" discs in fronts and 10" in the back, all around vented. Moving from the exterior inwards, the Recaro racing seats hug you very nicely as you dive deep into a corner along with the three-spoke sport steering wheel that helps you place you hands better. The brushed aluminium interior is a nice touch, along with the gauges. The 6-speed is nice, but truthfully, the 6th gear is not really needed for city driving, mostly reserved for highway to lower revs. The body kit adds to the looks, as their are side skirts, rear and front valence. Not to mention the entire car is dropped nearly 1" and all shock absorbers and struts have been stiffened. With the tire/rim and lowered suspension, the car corners very nicely, although I think it could go a little further in stiffening the car.
My only problem thus far was the sqeuky brakes, as most people have had with GLI's. Mine developed around 5k miles and went away after about 6ks. Their are several theories as to why they devloped. 1.) Becuase of the large amount of open area due to the rims for more brake dust to accumalate on the rotor and get stuck into the groves produced by the brakes being worn in on the rotor or 2.) That the brakes were just being worned in... Every once and a while I will get a squeel whenever I back up.
Again, I cannot tell you how many looks I get in this car, especially when it is clean the special black magic paints shows through. Besides the looks, the car sounds pretty nice with the tuned exhuast...it has a small rumble, just enough to turn your head.
On top of all this, this car is one of the most tunable cars, espcially since it is a turbo. All ready, I have a done a GIAC chip, which tacks on another 35hp and 80lbs. of torque, upgraded the diverter valve (sounds like the fast and the furious:)), added a Neuspeed P-Flow and upper tie bar, and a short shifter. All-in-all, with a few add ons, you have yourself a fast, yet smooth street racing machine, which still retains daily driveability.
If asked by someone to purchase one, I would say definitly....read morehide

- Great looks, fun to drive, recaro seats, balanced handling
- Brakes squeak
This is my first go with a VW. So far I have been pleased with the excellent service that I have received at the dealership. The only issues I have ran into is with the driver side spray nozzel which needed adjusted and the brakes squeaking. When I called the dealer they said they have an upgraded brake pad that resolves with the squeaks. Once that is fixed it is time to mode with a APR chip! The body roll that is associated with the balanced ride should be fixed with some smiple sway bars....read morehide

- Fit and Finish, Interior Component Quality, Suspension
- A lot of brake dust and my VW dealers crapy service department!
I can't believe all of the whining about the size of the rear seat! Do people actually buy a GLI as a family car? People...it's a GOLF with a trunk, for God's sake.
The 1.8 Turbo is OK, but this car would be unreal with a Turbo V6. What about Turbo lag? Yeah, it has it, it's the nature of the beast. After you learn to drive it properly, it's not a problem. It's really unbelievable how much VW gets out of that little 4 banger.
Does anybody know? Is there a beter, more fun car built in Mexico today? If so, I want one....read morehide

- Nice look, comfy recaro seats, easy handling, quick pick up in speed.
- no leg room in back, squeaky break, so-so fuel economy, front scrapes on roads if you arent careful.
I believe this car is worth slightly less than what I paid for, but overall I am not very disappointed with it. It looks great. I love the easy way it handles, and how quickly it picks up speed. You can feel the power. If i regularly carried a lot of passengers i'd be very dissapointed with the leg room in the back seat, but it is only usually just me and one other person in the car. When I do have people ride in back, it is very uncomfortable, as i have to push my seat far forward, and i still hear nothing but complaints about the complete lack of leg room. Fuel economy sucked for the first two months, but now i am getting decent mileage. The brakes are very loud and embarassing, especially in reverse, but I contacted my VW dealer and he said that they are now replacing all 2005 GLI brakes for free so that they will not squeak. I made an appointment (you should check it out). Chrome rear trim broke in half with the very slight bump from another car in the parking lot, which kind of sucks. The front of the vehicle can scrape the ground, so you have to be careful and go up and down inclines at an angle to prevent from this happening....read morehide

- Great gas mileage when it isn't in the shop, lots of pep in the engine, fun little car
- Electrical system, back seats small, made in mexico on a monday by a guy that drank too much tequilla
All in all I hate this car. It was wonderful when I bought it from Miramar VW but once I left the lot forget it. They gave me the boot like a red headed stepchild. No help from them at all and other VW dealers in San Diego. The entire electrical system was a problem. It started with the rear speaker and elevated to the entire electrical system needing to be replaced. Lemon Lawed it. DON"T BUY no matter how much you may think you like or want this car....read morehide

- Very quick and handles great.
- Brake noise, too much body roll for a "sport suspension"
Iam sold on VWs. I have had my car for about two months and i havent stopped driving it yet. ITs pretty fast for a stock 4cyl. and it handles pretty good. The only complaint i have with it is the brake noise which the dealer keeps dismissing, and it has quite a bit of body roll for a sport suspension. Other than that, i would recommend this car over any other car that i have drivin in this class, i.e. Civic Si. The GLI will cream them any day of the week, not that i would know from expirience or anything....read morehide

- Quick pick up, nice handling, good perforamance
- Cheap, high perforamnce tires are a pain, lots of noise after 45K
I like this vehicle, I leased it because it is fast faaast, handles well. Gas mileage is not so great. You will spend about $40 bucks at the pump (super). YOU WILL replace all 4 tires because even the smallest pot hole impact will cause a bubble in the tire, and since insurance does not cover that, you will pay out of pocket. Apparently those high performance tires are great for racing (comes standard) but if you are in a state with pot holes, tell the dealer to give you a discount on 4 new tires. Trust me, you will replace them.
The car has about 47K miles on it. Already I can hear weird noises, vibrations. It's a great car to lease. Buy?? Definitely not. If you want a more reliable vehicle in the same category and if speed and muscle is not your priority stick to a japanese import....read morehide
