- Its a cute car, fun to drive and when there are no mechanical issues (rare) it is a good car overall
- MAINTENANCE--it is in the shop ALL THE TIME.
I honestly have to say I absolutely love my Jetta and am sad that I have to report the following information, however cannot afford to keep it running. Its ridiculous that RELIGOUSLY every month my check engine light comes on warning me that another $300 to $500 bill will be in my hand in a couple of days. Between the cost of diagnostic work, the high price of parts for imports as well as the unbelievable hourly labor rate something as simple as replacing the Oxygen Sensor has somehow become a $300 adventure.
I have been through everything from my air conditioning not "being connected properly" when I purchased the car to replacing spark plugs not once, not twice but three times prior to 60,000 miles. I have replaced the spark plug wires twice, replaced the brakes twice, replaced the oxygen sensor once... Need I go on? Is it really necessary to replace all this before even getting to 60,000 miles?
Mine is a 2001, back when the warrantees were at 2 year 24,000 miles which makes this story even more disturbing. I have put thousands of dollars into this car since the beginning of 2005 and spent days at a time without a car because service was taking so long to turn it around. Waiting for parts, waiting for a technician... Its all hurry up and wait. Even an oil change is an all day event with this car.
