- Excellent Fuel Economy, DIESEL, handling is very good
- The rear seat is extrmely small
I purchased an 04 Jetta GLS TDI-PD in 04/04 and I love driving this car. The front seats are comfortable, even on long trips. The leather looks good and the heated seats (mirros and windshield washer spray nozzles) are a blessing in the cold winter months.
I average around 45MPG with my 5-speed out of every tank. The break up is probably 80% city driving 20% hwy. My best tank was 52MPG in 100% hwy driving.
The TDI accelerates into traffic nicely and the car handles extremely well.
My chief complaint about the car is how small the rear seats are. I would not recommend this to anyone who would be carrying their teenaged children or adults frequently in the rear seats (that is why VW made the Passat). I carry my three year old and four year old in the rear seats (in their booster seats) daily, it is tight, but doable and they don't complain.
I would, however, highly recommend this car to anyone looking at small cars though, it is much more comfortable the the Toyota Corolla (which I traded for this car), and the Civic, Sentra or Mazda 3.
Given the choice, I would purchase the car all over again. No regrets here.
The Jetta TDI is also a better value than the Civic HCH (Hybrid) or the Toyota Prius....read morehide

- between 49 and 55 MPG, excellent build qulity
- doors squeek
I bought my (03 jetta TDI GLS) new and I've put 51,000 miles on thus far with no troubles, other than the squeeky door seals. The worst milage I've recorded was 45 MPG right after I bought it, and that was probably due to the cold weather (-25). The best milage was on a trip to Chicago where I drove 686 miles on 12.5 gallons (~55 MPG), with three passengers, who said they were not overly comfortable due to the fairly small back seat. Other than that, it's a great car....read morehide

- This car moves and the 44 MPG (for me) is awesome
- The back seat is not for adults;I'd get the leather seats if I had it to do over again.
I'll be buying Jettas for a long time. I got the balck trim which looks sweet. I haven't been overly impressed with the Monsoon Sound System though. The techtronic transmission makes for easier handling on icy hills.

- back seat is to small for an infant carrier
great car for the daily commute, but a little to small for a family car.
