2007 Volkswagen Jetta Sedan

- Driving dynamics, engineering, safety features, crash test results.
- VW service, parts always on backorder, service techs damage car.
Engineering, safety, and build quality are first rate. Gets 33 m.p.g. highway at 70 m.p.h. Leg and headroom excellent for my 6'3" frame. Lots of content for the money ($22K). Leatherette seats very comfortable. Tiptronic 6-speed transmission great!
If only VW service approached the design and driving dynamics of the car. Routine service requires two visits as parts are always "backordered". Not even cabin filters are in stock. Safety recall handled very poorly, took five weeks for the parts/fix to repair a potential fire hazard! Routine warranty service resulted in body damage when the service tech removed the door and dropped it. Profuse apologies, no charge for the painting and dent removal, etc. But it's a month before they can do the work, and I'm without the car for four days when they finally fix it.
And VW doesn't get it. The cars aren't exactly cheap to buy or maintain anymore. Oil changes are $85.00. The cars are very difficult to fix. My mom got better service on her Sable. I really like the car and rolled the dice in the hopes that VW service and reliability was better than the media reports indicated. HOWEVER: Mysterious noises come and go, A/C doesn't like very hot days, electrical gremlins recently starting to surface.
The new Jettas have DELETED an important safety feature previously standard on the 05 and 06 models as a cost cutting move on the '07 and 08s; the AHR (active head restraint) seats are no longer offered.
Still like my Jetta. But would I buy another? Probably not. And I'll sell it before the warranty is up.
