- Great looks and handling. Fun car to drive.
- Little rough at times - TERRIBLE on gas. VERY DISSAPOINTING
I bought a new 2008 Jetta in March when gas starting increasing. I was looking for a little better mileage, considering I was driving a Hummer H3 at the time. Mostly I wanted a car that got decent mileage and was fun to drive to and from work.
Needless to say I was more than a little dissapointed when my new Jetta was getting only 2 more miles per gallon than my Hummer H3. I never got more thatn 17 miles to the gallon out of the 2.5L engine. I was so concened about it that I took it to the shop 3 times in it's first 3,000 miles to ask them about this. The response I got was that the window sticker info was an average of test vehicles and that the "range" was 16-22 city and 24-33 highway. I babied this car and drove it totally with fuel savings in mind and it did nothing of the sort.
I became even more frustrated with it when I realized on a trip to St Louis in our 2008 Yukon, that it averaged 19.4 miles per gallon on the whole trip and was averaging 19.2 in the city, according to the computer and gas fill up cheks I did personally.
Needless to say my gas savings idea with a small car proved to be useless. I'm now driving a used Chevrolet Silverado that is getting the same 16.8 mpg average the my Jetta was getting.
If fuel economy is high on your list, this is not the car for that. Great car, except that it's not great on gas.
