Review after 20 months of ownership. I bought this vehicle new in 2011.
Pros:
Fuel economy cannot be beat. TDI I average mid 30s in city driving and upper 40s on highway. I admittedly have a heavy foot at times. The car looks great. I upgraded to 18" rims and it looks like an A4. Great looking car. Interior layout is great, minimalist guages.
Cons:
Very poor rearward and passenger side visibility. I am very good at using mirrors but trying to merge or change lanes to the right in this car is like driving blind. Headrests impede rear view mirror and over the shoulder views. Bad! Bad!. Touchscreen Nav and entertainment system takes some getting used to. Not a good idea to try to page through the menus while driving. I still like the tactile response of actual buttons. Seats are not very comfortable. Even with multiway adjustment it is difficult to find a comfortable driving position. On the plus side though the heated seats work really well! A huge bonus in the Pacific NW where it is cold most of the time.
Driving excitement: eh. Not even on the same page as my Mazda 6 or CX-7 those were great driving vehicles...this one will get you there (on very little fuel) but with very little excitement.
On the whole it is a good 'value' but given a do over, I would not buy another....read morehide0 out of 0 people found this review helpful.

- Pros
- Quality, style, more for less
- Cons
- unexpected rattling, fuel economy
Purchased As New
The fuel economy might not be so great compared to other compact cars, but the performance isn't so bad either. There's plenty of room in the back even if you pull the seat back. As far as the styling goes I come to think of it as a "Grown-up" jetta which starting to see as a design language on new volks. The jetta is excellent, and technology is what most people would use without the dash being cluttered. Only concern is the rattling noise but soon to check out. It's not boring, not to bland either, you get what you pay for!...read morehide

- Pros
- mpg average is 28-30, smooth ride, low road noise
- Cons
- transmission jumps sometimes at low speeds, but rarely happens
Purchased As New
I have loved this car. It drives smoothly and picks up very quick if you need it to. I wish the mpg were higher, but 28 mpg is not bad. The console has technology you would actually use and not filled with buttons you do not need. I don't understand why some people complain the interior looks cheap because it does not. The back seat has more than enough leg room for passengers as well as a huge trunk. No point in spending the extra money on a Passat if you are wanting a Volkswagen....read morehide

- Pros
- Very good handling, power with good fuel eco, more attractive than any other car at this price point
- Cons
- All or nothing options packages, ride is a bit stiff (even stiffer on the SEL)
Purchased As New
I have owned this vehicle for almost a year.
I researched for some time before buying and finally settled on a Jetta. Nothing else at this price point came close to it. Volkswagen really does make cars that people want to drive.
Don't rely on me or anyone else to sway your opinion very far - Go drive it! That is true of any car.
I would have liked an automatic A/C control, and a turbo-charged engine. But the 2.5 liter 5 cylinder is a good compromise between fuel economy and power. The 6 speed automatic transmission is excellent - It shifts similar to the way you'd shift if it were a standard transmission, especially if you put it in sport mode.
The only quality issue I've experienced is tiny, almost inaudible rattles coming from somewhere in the front doors. I had to nitpick to come up with this complaint.
If you drive this car, and then drive anything else for the same price - you'll be back to buy it. Unless of course you are simply not a fan of excellent handling cars with plenty of power and good fuel economy. If you don't like cars with modern tech features and comfortable and attractive interiors - then this may not be the car for you. :-)...read morehide0 out of 0 people found this review helpful.

- Pros
- Great fuel MPG and LOTS of power!!!
- Cons
- Do not like the arm rest!

Much more powerful than my 2005 TDI Jetta! Ride is about the same, but lots more room. Averaging over 44 on trips and 42 MPG on most runs to town. Take off is super! In 3rd or 4th when I punch it, I am up to 80 MPH in a flash! Have the Nav and all the bells and whistles, love them all, especially the use of an SD card in the radio and the IPod in the glove box. Do not really need the Sat radio. Lots of new stuff that the 2005 does not have....read morehide

- Pros
- Comfort, road feel, fuel economy, size, trunk,
- Cons
- Price, dealer practices, availability, tire size

I traded my 2009 Rabbit (Golf) for the Jetta TDi, earlier this week. The bunny was a fun, 5 cylinder go-cart, but I was ready for something more grown up. The Jetta almost feels like an Audio or BMW. Poor man's Mercedes. It rides like it is on rails, the interior is quiet, the handling if quite good for the size. The TDi engine is the real star of the show. At first I was sad to give up 35+ HP, but with the diesel I gained 60+ Ft/LBs of torque and lots of miles per gallon. Now I get 35+ MPG in the city and way over the rated 42 on the highway. This vehicle nets out as more green than a Prius because of that (and no exotic batteries). The only rough spots are the dealers, a tire size one inch too small and a stiff upcharge for the diesel engine....read morehide

I got my Jetta TDI w/Nav as a replacement of my 2001 TDI with 207K miles.
I didn't like the previous 2010 design but this one I loved as soon as saw it. I was very pleasantly surprised when I sat in it: the car was considerably BIGGER than my old one especially rear sit.
I had it for 7 months now and still love it. Its handling is great and performance (8.8 sec. 0-60) allows to be bold sometimes.
I love my car!...read morehide0 out of 0 people found this review helpful.

- Pros
- Great style, decent economy, good manual shifter
- Cons
- Questionable performance for the money

This Jetta is, in about the year that I've leased it, a tremendously BASIC car. The base model sees the return of the (decently..) reliable two point SLOW engine, which runs with a steady reliable clop. Screamingly noticeable on this car is the library silence aura that has suffocated the plague like dash rattle of the Mk 5 models. The car seems also noticeably lighter than the mk 5 generation. You will find, in driving this vehicle, despite any initial grudges or preconceptions, an admiration for the purity of standard economy driving. Perhaps the engine could use more oomph and indeed you might have a better deal in the much improved 2.5 engine. However, despite this setback, in moments of scathing clarity, you will be gaining on or indeed overtaking V6-V8 gas guzzlers with only 115 HP at your disposal. Hello, Lazarus moment....read morehide
