- Nice interior, navigation, and definitely good value.
- VW quality control.
Purchased As New
My wife and I picked up our 2012 SEL Premium on a Thursday with 15 miles on the odometer. Two days later, the odometer read 145 miles as my wife sat broke down in a really bad neighborhood in Philadelphia. The car was towed and I couldn't believe it. EPC and engine light was on. She said the engine shook violently, she pulled over, the car shut off and wouldn't restart. This thankfully happened at a speed of 35-40 MPH. Turns out, the valve stem broke off, was ingested into the engine and a new engine was needed. WHAT??? I couldn't believe it and was a very angry customer at this point. Anyway, apparently VW had "never" seen this happen so early on. Nonetheless, the dealership did what any good dealer should do, gave us a brand new car.
Besides this first part, the car indeed is nice. Only gripe is some minor QC stuff. On the way home from the dealership, I had to pop a side panel into place because it was never done right at the factory. Also, some glue on the headliner needs to be removed, and we are owed a new radio with navigation because right from the factory, there is a big chip out of the navigation display. Looks like someone took a pen to it. If I didn't point it out to the dealer, it would be our problem now. I hate to say it, but I think the quality control out of Mexico is to blame. I honestly can't recall many products from Mexico that I have applauded for their amazing quality. To give credit to VW, I was told QC out of Mexico is a well known issue and the same manufacturing process that would occur in Europe, occurs in Mexico. Recently they placed European staff down there to fix the problems.
The car has a beautiful beige/black contrasting interior, similar to those seen in bmw's. For a great price, you can get all the extra's that you would see on most luxury cars. I actually like the interior better than my 2007 BMW 325xi. If looking for a European designed (Mexican built) car, at a good price, the Jetta certainly is what you're looking for. Hopefully the reliability will be better on our second one. Things happen for a reason, maybe we weren't meant to have that first one, who knows. We did buy the extended warranty just incase. Thank you VW for not sticking us with a warranty repair, aka new engine and doing the right thing, by replacing the car.
On a side note, this car is very safe. Probably has better crash test ratings than my Volvo. Our insurance dropped $111/year by adding this new car and removing her previous car, a 2005 Toyota Camry, also a very safe car.
If you're getting a Jetta, stay away from the base model and go for an SEL or TDI. You'll be happy you did....read morehide
