- Great fuel economy, smooth manual transmission, impressive torque, heated seats and side mirrors.
- Brakes squeak until they are warmed up, easy to stall in first gear.
It's been a long time since I have been excited about a car, but I can truly say I love my new Sportwagen TDI. The best part by far is the fuel economy. I average 40 mpg (mix of highway and side streets) and can go two weeks before filling up. I even got 48 mpg on a recent highway trip during the holidays, and it's barely broken in!
It also has impressive torque - a lot more than the AWD Subaru Legacy wagon I traded in. Even though I had to pay MSRP, the price was less than I paid for my Subaru in 2002 and is certainly reasonable given all the standard equipment, like the heated seats, heated windshield washer and side view mirrors, which are a dream come true for this New England driver.
It's not a big wagon in comparison to others out there, but it holds my family and our 100-lb lab in the back with plenty of room to spare....read morehide

- Outstanding fuel economy, Great driving dynamics, Well engineered
- I'm not crazy about the passenger side windshield wiper...thats it so far
DONT BE AFRAID to try the TDI !!! Its a diesel engine, but not what you may think of when you think diesel engines. Its clean, and is actually much more quick and lively than expected, especially during highway passing. This car is rated at 30 city and 41 highway, but thats not the whole story. I work 46 miles from where I live. Its all highway miles on my commute. I HAVE YET TO OBTAIN LESS THAN 42.5 MPG and thats when getting stuck in traffic. In town I've yet to see less than 32mpg. I think its true what I've read...the way the EPA measures mileage doesn't treat diesel engines 'fairly'. The record trip so far during the commute is 48.1 mpg !!! Its Amazing. We drove from Washington DC to SC for Thanksgiving (about 500 miles) and got stuck in some bad traffic on the way down...lots of stop and go...so we only got 41 mpg, but on the way back at 70+ mph we got 44.2 mpg.
In addition to the awesome gas mileage, its a quiet and comfy car. its roomy, and handles like the German car that it is. Tight. The seats are comfortable on long trips, and the TDIs come with an upgraded stereo system. (10 speakers and great sound) The seats in the wagon fold flat when you need space, and I've had myself and 4 other adults in it who said they didn't feel like they were in a sardine can. I have the 6 speed manual, and I really love it. It shifts very smoothly. IF YOU'RE THINKING ABOUT A TOYOTA PRIUS BUT DON'T REALLY LIKE THE WAY THEY LOOK, YOU OWE IT TO YOURSELF TO TRY THE NEW VW TDI ENGINES. By the way, the first 60 thousand of them sold in the U.S. come with a $1300 dollar tax credit for the year you buy due to the fact that they are a 'clean burn' engine. I have 3000 miles on mine as of right now, and I haven't found anything about the car I don't like. I think VW has done a great job with this.
I highly recommend a test drive. Happy motoring....read morehide

- Excellent exceleration. Firm and stable suspension. Fits three adult passengers very comfortably.
- Rear half of panoramic sunroof does not slide back. Heat and AC fan is overly noisy and underpowered
Never owned a station wagon before. Even scowled at the thought of one. We chose the Salsa Red with a black interior. We love the car and would recommend it to anyone. We recently took a 200 mile road trip with tall adult friends. The car handled extremely well in heavy rain and definately grabbed the attention of other drivers. It was noticable other drivers were admiring the car. Our friends enjoyed the rear seat spaciousness and trunk space for all the gifts we purchased along the way. Sirius satellite radio made the trip even more fun. We came across some talk radio and comedy channels that were very amusing. We have not tried the ESP out yet, but we're assuming it will not do much since the car handles so well already. We would highly recommend this car to people who would like a safe comfortable family and friends vehicle....read morehide

- This has enough room for my music gear, has stump-pulling torque, 1000% more fun than a prius
- decontenting. no option for homelink, no option for real leather OR cloth
I had been on a waiting list since late June, finally took delivery of my car this week (nov 10 2008). I did, however, get the EXACT car I ordered, nothing more, nothing less. I paid MSRP, nothing more, nothing less. I will recommend that you get the stick shift, read tdiclub and vwvortex forums for problems with the dsg auto in previous iterations. Not to mention, the stick is much much better for the grin factor. The panoramic sunroof is beautiful, I didn't go for it but this is one option I wish I had had chosen. YMMV. This car is very fun to drive. This car is the perfect weapon for slapping the smugness right off the face of a prius owner....read morehide

- Well equiped, good gas mileage, drives like a sports car, but is verty comfortable
- Headlights don't shut off automatically, air conditioner a bit weak.
My wife and I both love the car so far. No problems that needed fixing. Added alloy wheels which makes the car look a lot better. Get about 20mpg about town, and over 30mpg on short trips. No long ones yet. Love the Lazer Blue color, and loading and unloading things through the 5th door.

- Great performance, incredible fuel economy, excellent fit and finish, outstanding ergonomics
- VERY difficult to find. At least 6 months to order. I lucked out when I found mine..
I am not overstating it when I say, "This is the perfect car!" Peppy and torqey performance with great handling on the twisties. The interior is very spacious with great ergonomics. Solid German fit and finish with the obligatory "thunk" when you close the doors. All of the above....with the added benfit of 40+ MPG. I actually am getting a little over 50 MPG on the freeway at 65!
My wife's owns the Ford Escape Hybrid and the VW blows it away in every aspect. It is bigger inside, and get 10+ more MPG. Plus, none of the Hybrid engine kick-on and the little gas engine wheezing on the hills. My wife is going to trade in her Hybrid the second another Jetta Wagon hits the showroom!
As for availability, they are VERY dificult to find. Just call around and you can get lucky like I did. I actually found the color I wanted. Do NOT pay more than MSRP. Some dealers think they can and will try to convice you a "market adjustment" is warranted.
I have been a diesel driver and fanatic for decades (starting with the 1982 Benz 300D). I am amazed by this new 2.0 TDI. Finally, Americans can enjoy what the Europeans have enjoyed for decades.......a diesel powered performance-oriented car with outstanding fuel economy and solid handling. No wonder Ford and GM are going bankrupt....read morehide

- Great fuel economy. comfort
- The design is dated!!! Similiar design as the Passat wagon which has been around for years
Nice car. Like the large sunroof and interior controls. Exterior design is boring and dated.

- TDI fuel economy & get up & go all in one...
- Didn't get to pick my color - they are wait listed...
I love the TDI SportWagen. This is my second VW TDI, and I can't say enough good about these cars... over 40MPG on average with mixed city/hwy driving. This Wagen is awesome, more storage, sporty look & drive, easy on the fuel consumption for cost and ecology. LOVE IT!

- Fuel ecomony, $1300 tax credit, space is fab - fit's entire family of 4 humans and 150lbs of canine
We moved fast when we heard of tax credit - we also became less option picky when we realized the waiting lists. Purchased the car the day the stock market barfed 900+ points and haven't regretted the purchase for a second!
Awesome car - true in every regard to the VW spirit. Please bring on the Diesel Eurovan....read morehide

- Fun to drive, Great Fuel Economy (43+mpg), Lots of Power, Amazing Sunroof
I really love this car! We got the 6 speed manual transmission TDI Sportwagon with the panaoramic sunroof (or is it a convertible?).
This car has the power, the handling, the comfort to make driving fun!
And with the great gas mileage (I've been getting 43 mpg around town, running errands) I find myself constantly looking for another reason to go somewhere ...
I think VW has finally got a winning car! I wonder if they'll bring any other TDI's out as a 6 speed, maybe the Passat or the new minivan?
BTW, this car is extremely clean. After about 1000 miles, the tailpipe looks brand new from the inside; absolutely no soot or anything.
You also qualify for the $1300 tax incentive, since it is such a clean car!
I'd highly recommend this car!...read morehide
