- Fun to drive, love the panoramic sun roof
- Rear air vents barely work, no option for a rear back up camera
I test drove many different cars and decided to check out VW's. Once inside the wagon, my eyes immediately locked onto the panoramic sun roof. The sun roof covers the entire front and back seats and gives a spacious, open feeling to the interior. This was a good start. Then I started looking for the controls to adjust my seat. This is where the disappointment began. A lever under my seat to move forward and different adjustments on the side made a simple adjustment, difficult. The console was just okay - once again another example that I was clearly getting a more economical and less luxurious vehicle.
The sportswagon I was test driving was a SE automatic. The steering was tight and the car held to the road. It seemed to have plenty of power and was just fun to drive. Overall I was impressed - but still not ready to make my final decision.
A few things about the car bothered me: the seat adjustments and the air conditioning. When I tested the air, it didn't seem very cold. Also, the rear air vents barely blow out much of anything.
After researching the car more, I realized the SEL had most everything I wanted; more horsepower, bigger tires, real leather, power driver seat with memory and radio controls on the steering wheel.
I made yet another appointment with the dealer to test drive the SEL (he had one w/o sun roof or navigation) but at least I could feel the difference in the motor, tires, and interior. We took the SEL for a spin and I was absolutely in-love! The SEL is worth every penny more!!! (Yes a few thousand more and I'd be in an Audi - but a base Audi w/o navigation and sun roof.) The 2.0 turbo motor (which is the exact same as the Audi A3) is even more of a blast to drive. The power seats make such a difference. The leather is real and much more plush. Best of all the air conditioner (the SEL has dual air) is much cooler! (The rear air vents are still pathetic - truly they need to look into them.) But the air that comes out of the console is much cooler. I was sold.
The only two things I would have VW improve next time around: rear air vents and the option to have a rear back up camera. (Jetta's don't come with rear back up cameras - which is too bad since they pride themselves in safetly.) All in all, I am excited and can't wait for my new Jetta."...read morehide

- great fuel economy, standard features and safety features, sport transmission makes it fun to drive
- slight hesitation that is normal with diesel engine
The car is tons of fun to drive. With the automatic transmission, there is a sport mode that adds a lot of pep and growl to your starts. There is an ever so slight hesitation that is normal with a diesel, but beyond that, the car responds very well. The car handles great and has stability control and ABS to help me with Chicago weather situations.
EPA mileage estimates seem very understated. I average low to mid 30s in suburban peak period local driving, and mid to upper 40s on the highway, and I think I could do better than upper 40s on a long trip. I have been monitoring my mileage and on a trip where I only get high 20s, it is such severe stop and go city driving that I spent much of the trip waiting on trains, more than one cycle at several stoplights, long lines at stop signs, road construction, etc.
Storage is great. I can drive three high school hockey players (one goalie) with their gear in the back. The sticks slide through the center console in the rear seat and the kids' seating isn't compromised. And I can drive them around getting 2-3 times the mpg of the SUV alternative.
The sound system is great, I'm enjoying 18 preset stations of satellite radio. In dash 6 CD changer, iPod jack, I almost have too many listening options. There is even a regular (2 prong) outlet in the back of the center console for passengers to plug in a computer, portable DVD player or whatever.
While the feature lists I saw said nothing about heated front seats or climate control, the car had them standard. I am very pleased with my purchase and I feel that Volkswagen is providing excellent value for the price....read morehide

- Space and performance like a sport car
- Some men think is a women car, but all women like to see a men in this car.
Lots of compartments and airbags (10). Fuel economy and power. You can see an engineer thinking in this design.

- Good fuel-economy,more room than my Jeep Liberty, all of extras on the standard model
- cd player has jammed up already, and the trunk won't pop open with the remote
We just traded in our Jeep Liberty for a Volkswagon Jetta Sport Wagon, and overall we are very pleased. We get about twice as many mpg, and definately have more space for our once a month shopping trips. We have a rear facing car seat, and I definately have more leg room with it behind me in the wagon than I did in the Jeep. We have had aprpblem with a cd not ejecting, and the back not opening with the remote. Overall it drives good, is spacious, and very comfortable....read morehide

- Great fuel economy and a great "driver's car"
- None I can find yet
I test drove one of the Jetta TDI's a couple of weeks ago. I took it overnight so I could drive it "the way I drive" and really thrash it. First, the EPA fuel economy ratings are way off. I couldn't get a good highway trip - too much construction here in Michigan this time of year - but in mixed stop-and-go and highway driving I averaged over 40 MPG (instant readings were regularly over 50 when cruising at 78 MPH). The car's ride is superb for this class of vehicle. I currently drive a Lexus ES 300 and the Jetta is ALMOST as quiet. The Jetta outperforms the Lexus in "driveability" - you actually look forward to taking turns at speed. Funnest car I've driven in a long time. This one had the DSG transmission which has to be experienced to be believed. And no one knew this was a diesel until I told them. It's that quiet. Bottom line - mine is on order and should be here August/September. I can't wait!...read morehide
