- Roomy, Stylish, Good Value, Good Fuel Economy
- Somewhat unpolished interior, Not quite as fun as my GTI
Purchased As New
After my wife gave birth to our first child, I had to give up my beloved GTI because it just wasn't big enough for car seats and strollers.
After countless hours of research, there were very few vehicles that I actually wanted to test drive, and the Jetta Sportwagen was one.
I ended up getting the SE (non TDI) mostly because my dealer could not get their hands on a TDI in the color I wanted. In the end, I am happy with this decision and find the fuel economy of this engine to be impressive, especially when you figure in the additional cost of diesel fuel. I think the only thing that would have put the TDI over the top from a financial perspective is the $1350 tax credit.
The vehicle performs amazingly well for what it is. It is not a GTI. The 0-60 time is slower, it's softer in corners (but that translates to a more comfy ride over bumps and around town). The engine is more than adequate. Regarding handling there is slight under steer, which is to be expected. I also went with the manual transmission, which I find more fun to drive.
The exterior is amazingly stylish, IMO, given that it is a wagon.
The interior is nice, but I think the dash could have been a little more stylish and a little less cheap looking. Oh well. Originally I was not concerned one way or the other if the vehicle I purchased had the panoramic sunroof, but have found that I do like it.
All in all, I would say it would be tougher to find a better value in this class of vehicle.
