- Steering, ride quality, luxurious interior, quiet, tons of space, strong 5 cylinder engine
- Volume knob and fast forward function on CD player are lousy. Doors should unlock when engine off

Excellent car. Engaging to drive, but rides well and is very quiet. The steering is accurate and is not numb or feel disconnected. The interior feels like it belongs in a much more expensive car; I recently rode in a Mercedes M-class SUV, and it had nothing on the interior of this Jetta. Seats are very comfortable, and the telescopic steering wheel gives you a perfect driving position. Far more cargo room than the Mazda 3, Matrix, Impreza hatch.
This car simply feels solid, planted, and stable. A far cry from the Corolla/Matrix or Civic that Jettas compete with.
The 5 cylinder gas engine is strong, particularly with the manual transmission. Good low-end power; car accelerates well as low as 2000 rpm. Gets 27 mpg in mixed driving, 30-32 mpg on the highway.
The 5 cylinder gas wagon costs at least $4500 less than the TDI, and still comes with heated seats, heated mirrors, power everything, cruise control, power seatback, keyless entry, CD/Aux input, air conditioning, etc. I don't think the TDI is worth the extra cost; maintenance is more expensive and it would take me 8 years of driving to make up the high sticker price through fuel savings.
Reliability for the gas engined Jettas seems to have improved since 2005, so I am hoping this will be a reliable vehicle. It was worth the risk to try it for me; this is a great car. 10,000 miles so far and no problem whatsoever.
