- Great fuel economy; European "feel" & craftsmanship; sky roof option; manual transmission option
- diesel fuel costs more (not VW's fault)
Purchased As New
One year later and I still feel I'm driving a new car. From the moment you close the door (and hear that solid "whump" typical of a European model) you know you're in a quality (built / designed) auto. This is NOT the diesel of old. Clean exhaust, very little engine noise (except at subzero temps), and a wonderfully smooth (manual) transmission. The panoramic sunroof option is worth every penny. It changes completely your perception of the roominess of the car. Speaking of which, there's a LOT of room back there! The electronic display can be easily formatted for language (Sprechen Sie Deutsch?) and standard units (metric, imperial, USA). The Bluetooth option means I can use my iPhone hands-free. The advertised mileage benefit is very real. I get the mid-30's in town/winter using studded snow tires, no less; I get the mid- to upper- 40's in summer using all-season tires. Seats are comfortable for long drives (and I love those heated seats in winter). The ventilation system is tricky in cold (sub-zero) weather, but what car doesn't have that problem? With the side airbags, well-positioned roll bars, etc., the TDI qualifies for insurance discounts. I feel absolutely safe in this VW. One year and 13,000 miles later, I've had not one problem at all with this car.
