- fuel economy, reliability
- diesel smell, maintanence cost
I've had my '03 Jetta TDI, 5 spd, wagon for 1 1/2 yrs, already have almost 50k miles on it & absolutely love it! I commute, avg almost 50 mpg & obviously love the fuel economy. I'm not real crazy about the deisel smell but it's a small trade off. The TDI is very peppy but took a while to break in. Engine didn't really break in for about 20k miles but I've been told that that is common for diesels. Fuel economy is not as good in the cold Ohio winters but still very good. The ONLY problem that I've had is I had fuel line freeze up last year on a below zero day & car had spent the night outside. I've not had one recall or any warranty issues, not a single thing wrong!!! From reading reviews on this site it seems really important to find a good dealership to buy from. The dealership where I bought mine is great, VW is the least expensive car that they carry & boy do they suck up to their customers! It makes the high maintanence cost worth it though. Oil change alone on the TDI is $69 & up, not cheap but if I can get 250k miles out of the engine it will be worth it.
