- Unreliable - "check engine" light always coming on - Expensive to diagnose and fix
Purchased As New
I had numerous small problems with vehicle while it was under warranty but as soon as the warranty expired, the MAJOR problems began to surface. Constant "check engine" light requires dealer to perform "diagnostic" test at $85 to $95 each time. The "check engine" codes keep changing and contradicting each other. I would spend a fortune doing the repairs that VW indicates are needed. The car has only 51K miles!...read morehide

- The red convertible is a beautiful looking car and catches peoples' eye.
- Check engine light stays on. VW says it's a computer problem which they can't resolve.
I loved the car when we first got it. I have had several VWs since I was a kid. My 1968 and 69 had problems but my 74 lasted for 17 years and I got what I paid for it new.
So, I decided to buy a new convertible turbo in 2005. In the first 500 miles, the check engine light came on when it started up and stayed on. We took it to the dealership and they were the rudest people I have ever dealt with. I reported them to VW of America and they were just as bad. They said they couldn't fix the problem because it was a computer problem and the techs hadn't a cure for it, yet.
I found the solution was to disconnect the red battery cable in the engine and the engine light would reset. But the problem is due to an engine misfire. Don't let VW tell you they will pay a month's payment to make you feel better. By doing this, you give up your rights to abitration or to have it considered a "lemon" by law.
Take it from me, they aren't built like they used to be and arrogance is there motto instead of customer satisfaction....read morehide

- looks cool
- car has many problems
Just got rid of a 2004 new beetle convertible with only 21000 miles on it.The car died twice on the road and also had many small problems with the plastic stuff. Also when the alternator failed the vw company replaced it with a"rebuilt" one. It seems that the policy at this company is not to replace expensive parts with new parts. This sucks!! my dealer was not so hot either. I will never buy or drive a VW again....read morehide

- Great fuel economy, very smooth ride.
- Don't like where cup holder is located, not enough room.
Really nice car for the price. Would move cupholder, and hesitates some on take off, other than that it's quick.

This car is not only awesome but it was ready for my I POD straight from the factory!
monsoon sound system has an auxiliary input jack that is located right under the seat heater on the middle console on the right hand side. All you need is a standard 3.5 mm plug cable ($4.99 at Radio Shack) and you are in business. I was quoted $800 to get my car to get I-Pod ready. $4.99 is more like it. I don't know why Volkswagen is not advertising that, not even the techs at the dealer knew about it!...read morehide

- good gas mileage, fun to drive, cute, roomy
- brake and gas pedal too close, no storage room, cup holders are in a strange place
This car is definately fun to drive. The car doesnt have much power, but gets the job done. It seems to have good gas mileage from what I can tell so far. Its very cute and trendy. Overall, the car is great. There is no storage room and the cup holders are in a weird place. but I love it

- Best automobile I've owned . I'd buy another again tomorrow .
- Would like more power & will probably "chip the computer .
Having owned many cars through out my life , I'm 57 , this has to be the most fun vehicle I've ever owned . The handeling , equipment options & overall sex appeal is more than I've ever experiensed in any car I've driven . As an artist the color palette was a dilema , so many beautiful choices . I settled on the mellow yellow & added a leopard fur interior & got the personalised license plate "POPCLT" as in pop culture . I haven't driven my car one day without a comment from soccor moms to children , and everyone in between . I feel I got my moneys worth two times over . Unless VW comes up with a radical new design I'll drive this ride for ever and I probably would keep this even if I purchase another VW product ....read morehide

- A blast to drive, smooth drive, great acceleration!
- Cup holder could be better.
I love to drive my bug around town. I have the GLS 1.8L manual, and it goes fast! Quick off the line and fun to drive even with a stick shift! I have received many complements on the Harvest Moon Beige with like interior from people of all ages. Men and women alike love this car. My daughter loves driving around with the top down. The back seat is able to hold adults, but not for great lengths of time. The front is somewhat small for a person with long legs. My 6 foot 1 inch husband loves to push the seat back and relax in the passenger seat! My other car is a Chevy suburban, so this is a great car to let loose in!!!
The wind blocker is a must for women with longer hair; it definately cuts down the air flow from behind. This car is great to park (it is so small)! Cheap to fill up even with gas prices rising. I did think I would get better gas mileage - but the fun of driving it takes the sting away. The trunk hold a lot more than you would think. Not a lot of noise with the top up - compared with other convertibles. And with the top down - the radio still sounds great. Perfect car for Southern California!!!...read morehide

- GREAT on fuel, handles nice, looks really good! Perfect for women
I have a 13 yr old and a 5 month old and we all love this car! It's fun, fairly affordable and perfect for us girls. When it's just my teenager and I, we enjoy driving with the top down and have had many, many compliments. I never thought I would own one of these, but after friends convinced me to at least test drive it, there was no turning back. I compared this to many compact - mid sized cars and this one was still my favorite. I don't like how the hard top Bugs look, but I do like the convertables! I was plesently surprised when I found out how good the crash test ratings were. I always assumed this would not be a good choice when it came to safety, but I was surely wrong. My baby's car seat fits just right in the back with the latch system. I would not recommend this for a man though because I am not sure if it would have enough room to fit comfortably on longer trips AND it has a very cute built in flower vase next to the stearing wheel. It handles like a little sports car on the road and has surprising get-up-and-go. The stereo sounds really good- even with the top down on the highway! I did not find it to be noisy at all (wind noise) with the top up as most people do with convertables. It's as quiet as any other vehicle....read morehide

- Smooth ride, great value for convertible, good performance.
- None so far.
I've owned this for 3 weeks. Ride is surprisingly very smooth and stable for such a small car. Purchase value was great for a convertible. Performance is fine, great braking and acceleration with 2.0L. Interior is comfortable even for 2 young kids in the back. Build quality is also fine. I'm very satisfied so far. Also impressive built in safety features....read morehide
