- Has a great ride, firm handling, excellent braking performance. Feels like a larger car.
- MPG averages 23 to 24, expected a bit more. Trunk space is tight, but what do you expect.
I've owned this new 05 convertible for almost 5 months and 6,000 miles It handled great during the late winter snow, ice and slush storms. Power top operation has been excellent and used very often. Very satisfied with build quality. I think the ride is outstanding for such a small car. The feel is that you are driving a larger car. Braking performance is excellent, ride is smooth and solid feeling. Front seating is ample, back is tight but fine for my 2 young kids.
I'm very satisfied so far....read morehide

- Lots of headroom
- Maintenance pig, extremely hard to work on, requires dealer service constantly, CHEAPLY made
We bought this car used last year and within a month the brake light switch had failed, which prevented the car from getting out of park. It was replaced (and had been replaced once before according to service records), and within 6 months it failed again. Three times it's been replaced now!
The light bulbs burn out very quickly and are incredibly difficult to change yourself.
The ride is farily rough, and potholes will knock your teeth out. The car does corner very well and has a solid feel on the road.
Fuel economy is below EPA estimates (about 25 hwy).
The interior is extremely cheap. Every little button, knob, and plastic accessory has broken or cracked. The armrest broke off, the cupholders (which are impossible to put anything in except a kiddie-meal size soda) cracked and fell out, the driver's side seat release broke off, the auto-window control on the pass. side doesn't work anymore, the fuel door release broke off and fell inside the door... should I go on? And, we are actually very gentle on the car! Our Honda doesn't have a single thing wrong with it and it's the same year!
The Mass Air Flow sensor has failed and apparently it's a very common thing in this car. That's $250 to fix.
The A/C leaked all the refridgerant out... I haven't even gotten an estimate on that.
VW Dealers want $500 for a basic tune up!!!
Did I mention it's burning a quart of oil every 3500 miles ... and it has 80k on it!
My mechanic sighs when I mention I need service on the car because it's so friggin hard to work on.
Basically, don't buy it. Stick with a Japanese car... there's nothing this car can offer except headaches and money down the drain....read morehide

I had electrical problems in the beginning i.e malfunctiong power windows, internal lights seemed to have mind of its own, engine rebulit after 8k miles(oil evaporated (!) on 600 mile trip-done by another dealer under warranty), but eversince I have no caomplaints...So far 52000 miles, fuel economy 20-25 mpg. Car drives fantastic at speeds 90 to 100 mph and is fantastically stable regardless weather conditions( i speed whenever it rains or snow, passing awd cars...),on the flat roads... I think the engine (2.0) is very sensitive to fuel and oil quality-requires super and syntetic oil... This thing grows on me ( I really hated vw..) but I am shopping for gls turbo, I missed 200hp last year...Maybe it's just love?...Since they will kill beetle in the next couple years......read morehide

- Nostalgia for those that had them in the 60's and 70's, front forward compartment
- Electrical System
I was so excited when they brough the beetle back! Since a Sun Bug was my very first car, I couldn't wait to get my hands on a new bug. Hubby thought I was crazy but home I came with one all the same. Within the first two days there were three electrical problems, the lights, the security system, the trunk light. Be prepared to spend a lot of time at your dealer and when you car hits 49K, IF you last that long, sell sell sell. Once this baby goes out of warranty it will cost you an arm and a leg. Until they move the factory out of Mexico I don't expect to see any improvments. I am very disappointed and am stuck in a car I can't wait to get rid of. Never again....read morehide

1999 gls 2.0 51,000 miles, not a problem with her. Going to buy a 2005 1.8 turbo model. Great cars.

- The only good thing about the bug is its look
- Almost every thing else is bad. The ride is horrible, fule consumption is not that good either
My wife dragged me yelling and kicking to the VW delarehsip to buy this car just over one year ago. The car had this very string new car smell to it, and we were unable to take any of our two children in it untill we took it to the dealer to fix it. As it turned out, the AC evaporator was spraied with somekind of chemical during manufacturing, and was supposed to be washed off before final assembly. VW issues a recal, and my dealer never allerted us. I dont know what chemical it was, and what are the lasting effects it had on us.
Any way, after the smell was fixed, we had a pleasent 3 months of trouble free ride, then the electric porblems began. Almost every warning on that dashbord came up at one point in time, and for every warning we had to take the car to the dealer to have a look at it....read morehide

- Good head room, and spacious dashboard
- Poor gas mileage for size of car, and a slew of electrical problems
My 2002 GlS model, with turbo engine has had nothing but electrical problems, starting just weeks after buying it new off the lot. I realized after three years, I bought a lemon, and have started a case against VW. Have had over a dozen electrical problems, some duplicates. Yes, most if not all are under warranty, but this is a newer car, and nobody should have to deal with these issues. Do you research before buying a VW, please. I had to learn my lesson the hard way....read morehide

- THIS CAR MAY BE A GAS SAVER IF YOU KEEP UP WITH MAINTENANCE, IT LOOKS GREAT, IS CONVENIENT
- NOT ENOUGH TORK TO IT NOR HORSEPOWER TO THE WHELL ESPECIALLY HAVING AN AUTOMATIC
I TOTALLY WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS CAR TO ANYONE. NOT HAVE I ONLY PERSONALLY EXPERIENCED DIFFICULTIES WITH THE CAR AS FAR AS MAINTENANCE BUT A FRIEND OF MINE HAD THE SAME EXACT ISSUES. THE LIGHTING OR HOUSING TENDS TO GO OUT, MY ENGINE LIGHT WENT ON NOT LONG AFTER I PURCHASED IT. ITS BEEN REALLY CONSUMING ALOT OF GAS AS IF ITS AN SUV OR SOMETHING. I'VE KEPT UP TO MAINTENANCE WTIH MY CAR AND SO FORTH, BUT THEN MY OVERHEATING LIGHT THEN APPEARS, COME TO FIND OUT THEY ONLY MAKE THE PART IN PLASTIC AND IT DOESNT COME IN METAL...SO THIS ALLOWS IT TO MELT AND OVERHEAT. WHAT DISSAPOINTMENT THAT WAS. AT ANY RATE, I'M EXTREMELY DISSAPPOINTED IN THIS CAR AND IM NOT THE FIRST. I FEEL LIKE I HAVE TO GO 50 MPH TO KEEP UP WITH THE LOCAL SIDE STREET DRIVERS. IT DOES NOT HAVE MUCH POWER IN IT AND THATS WHY IT BURNS SO MUCH GAS WHEN YOURE GOING UPHILL ON THE CAR....read morehide

- Good fuel economy
- Very expensive maintenance up keep.
$107.00 just to fix one head light bulb. Two weeks later second head light burns out.5 hrs trying to replace aircleaner. All maintenance must be preformed by a voltswagan dealer. making all regular maintenance very costly.
