2005 Volkswagen New Beetle User Reviews
GL 2.0L shown
- $4,612 - $5,867
- Characteristics - fun to drive and just love it to death.
- Headlights and some maintenance costs in beginning
I bought my first New vw beetle in 2001 2.0 GLS (5 speed) mainly to drive it back and forth to school over an hour away because of the good gas mileage. When I first bought my car I had the check engine light come on a few months later which the dealership explained to me that for some reason my beetle had received the incorrect instrument cluster. Weird that it would have received the wrong part but I went with it and got it fixed under warranty. I kept up with the scheduled maintenance of 40K and so forth. I have tried my best to get the oil changed every 3K miles. I know the maintenance book states different but I was raised up to know that when your car hits 3K miles from your last oil change to change the oil. My bettle has had a few various sensors go bad as far as air conditioner and seat belt sensor. These are not fun to pay for or fun to pay the labor to replace them but it has kept my bettle running to my satisfaction. My beetle now has over 92K miles on it, on it's third set of tires and I have to say it has been well worth my money. I had the timing belt changed at 90K and I have no reason to believe it couldn't take 90K more. I recently paid the car off and you couldn't pay me to get rid of it. I love the way it looks and I do my best to keep everything maintained. It has been an excellent car. I would definitely recommend it to someone else. OH before I forget I did see where some people had listed here about how much it costs to change a headlight. I searched on the internet for directions on how to do this - I refused to drive to the dealership to get a BULB changed! I am so used to changing them that I can probably have mine out changed and back in within 15 - 20 minutes with just around $6 or so for the bulb. It is relatively simple to do and if you take precautions like greasing the headlight assembly after the first bulb change it is easy to remove....read morehide

- Safe - saved my life
Yesterday, a drunk driver going over 100 miles per hour swerved out of the right lane on the PA turnpike (I was in the left lane going 75) and hit my 2001 New Beetle. I slammed up against the concrete barrier and flipped over onto the highway. The arched roof of this car absorbed the impact and prevented me from suffering any trauma from above. I came to upside down, amazed to be able to crawl out from under the vehicle under my own power and brush the broken glass off my body. The car was totaled, but I only have a few cuts and bruises. The bystanders were shocked that I was so unmarred considering the condition of my car.
This car, and it's phenomenal safety design, saved my life....read morehide

- No trim specified for this review
- drives like a sportscar; great city car; very dependable
- miss having a rear window windshield wiper; would like more color choices
I absolutely love my 2001 green Bug. People smile at me wherever I go. I think little children think I drive a cartoon car - even the youngest children take notice. Gas mileage is great; you can park anywhere; there is a simplified version of every bell and whistle you could want; holds tons; I never lose it in a parking garage; no one will ever steal it; drives great in snow. After 4+ years, I have no complaints; I wish it would last forever. From my experience, I would highly recommend buying on to anyone....read morehide

- Comfortable, Roomier than thought
- Everything else
I have owned a 2000 New Beetle GLS for 13 months now and am finally trading it in. I have taken it into the shop about 15 times in the past 13 months, and am fed up with maintenence for this car. Not to mention, all of the sensors that i've had to replace have been very, very expensive-- What would have happened if my warranty had run out? Last Monday I said, enough is enough! I am trading it in for a new Scion TC. Please do not buy this car unless you want to spend every other week in the shop getting it fixed!...read morehide

- Good drive when all is OK. Ride and appearance are great
- Three warranty repairs in four months of car purchased in May 05.
New 2005 beetle. The old check engine problem happened after only four months and two days after 9.000 miles and 10K maintenance. Repair was oxygen sensor. Also, chirp nosie comes from rear of car when going over rough roads (of course not all the time). One visit to dealer confirmed (in for 10K maintenance) the chirp noise but technician needed to have it again for a second visit. The second visit (also for the check engine light) will now lead to visit number three as they could not replicate the chirp noise. Number 3 warranty item, rear cup holder failed within one month of purchase. On order now for two months.
But, great car when all is well! Jury still out on keeping for long term. I have owed cars from Honda, Toyota and Nissan. Level of problems similar to my last Nissan-same check engine issue.
A lot of service and warranty activity for a NEW car!...read morehide

- Good on gas, lots of headroom
- Zero reliability, low resale value
I bought 98 Beetle with 27,850 miles on it. It was an excellent ride for six months. After that everything began failing- A/C (bought new compressor for $1000), clutch, all light bulbs burned at least twice, plastic light bulbs housings failed apart during exchange, door and trunk remote entry stopped working. Not mentioning extremely difficult access to everything under the hood.
Finally-with 52 000 miles on it- engine failed beyond any repair
An estimate for new/rebuild engine was over $2000 and I gave up....read morehide

- I must say that my 2003 Turbo "Color Concept" Beetle gets a TON of looks!
- I have had so many electrical problems with this vehicle.
My 2003 is very sharp. The appearance is awesome. The black and red leather seating is great, not to mention the ''automatic spoiler'' that comes up at 45 mph! However, those few details do not compare to the numerous electrical problems the vehicle has had. I have had the headlight fixed 4 times. Also, the drivers side window has been fixed 3 times. The weirest thing has to be all the electrical items in the car turning off and on. I have to say this was the WORST. With gas at $ 3.25 *(for PREMIUM)* in Ohio, it is getting INSANE to keep the beetle on the road! It guzzles gas like a Hummer. My previous car WAS a Toyota Celica, but this is INSANE! My mother and I purchased our cars at the same time, she also has a 03' Beetle. Her car is perfect. No problems! (except the dealership forgeting to put coolent in it when she purchased it!!) Overall I would NEVER buy another Beetle. I am very disapointed....read morehide
