- Fun to look at, fun to drive (when the transmission isn't eating itself)
- Transmission problems, expensive to maintain, poor service
I have a 2002 turbo diesel which I absolutely adored up until the past few months. As stated in an earlier review, it cost over $100 just to replace a headlight, for which the bulb costs a mere $8.00. Seems you have to dismantle the engine in order to get to the headlight. Do it yourself oil changes aren't gonna happen, either....and the nice folks at Jiffy Lube won't even attempt to go there. Rolled my electric window down on a nice sunny day last summer and it wouldn't roll back up. At least that was under warranty.
My bug has 57,000 miles on it and the transmission very thoughtfully decided to self destruct. It sounded like it was eating itself. Hauled it to a nearby dealership in Northern KY (Florence) and went through 98 forms of Hell getting it serviced. First they gave me the "dumb old girl" treatment, then tried to tell me that the throttle body was gummed up and the transmission was fine. Finally got them to tear into the transmission and it was full of metal shavings. They then proceeded to try and convince me it was not under warranty. I had to call VW USA straighten it out. Hey...anyone wanna buy a Bug?? Cheap?...read morehide

- Good head room, and spacious dashboard
- Poor gas mileage for size of car, and a slew of electrical problems
My 2002 GlS model, with turbo engine has had nothing but electrical problems, starting just weeks after buying it new off the lot. I realized after three years, I bought a lemon, and have started a case against VW. Have had over a dozen electrical problems, some duplicates. Yes, most if not all are under warranty, but this is a newer car, and nobody should have to deal with these issues. Do you research before buying a VW, please. I had to learn my lesson the hard way....read morehide

- Great Gas Mileage
- Can be expensive to replace parts
I have been driving VW's since 1989. My first one was a Fox that went over 200,000 miles. The next three were diesels. I had a Jetta that was passed down to me that was very good on gas and performance. I purchased a 1996 Passat TDI and was even more pleased with it. I actually made it from Chicago to New York on one tank of gas. I currently own a 2001 Beetle TDI. It is not as roomy nor does it take me quite as far as the Passat, but it has been reliable and still fun to drive (A Volkswagen tradition). I have not had a lot of problems, but when I had to replace brakes, or other things it costs a lot of money and a lot of times you need to have a dealer repair things because it is so difficult or time consuming trying to do it yourself. I test drove a 2004 Passat TDI but was not impressed with the new technodrive transmission. I guess that would take some getting used to if I choose to continue with the next generation of VW's TDI....read morehide

- THIS CAR MAY BE A GAS SAVER IF YOU KEEP UP WITH MAINTENANCE, IT LOOKS GREAT, IS CONVENIENT
- NOT ENOUGH TORK TO IT NOR HORSEPOWER TO THE WHELL ESPECIALLY HAVING AN AUTOMATIC
I TOTALLY WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS CAR TO ANYONE. NOT HAVE I ONLY PERSONALLY EXPERIENCED DIFFICULTIES WITH THE CAR AS FAR AS MAINTENANCE BUT A FRIEND OF MINE HAD THE SAME EXACT ISSUES. THE LIGHTING OR HOUSING TENDS TO GO OUT, MY ENGINE LIGHT WENT ON NOT LONG AFTER I PURCHASED IT. ITS BEEN REALLY CONSUMING ALOT OF GAS AS IF ITS AN SUV OR SOMETHING. I'VE KEPT UP TO MAINTENANCE WTIH MY CAR AND SO FORTH, BUT THEN MY OVERHEATING LIGHT THEN APPEARS, COME TO FIND OUT THEY ONLY MAKE THE PART IN PLASTIC AND IT DOESNT COME IN METAL...SO THIS ALLOWS IT TO MELT AND OVERHEAT. WHAT DISSAPOINTMENT THAT WAS. AT ANY RATE, I'M EXTREMELY DISSAPPOINTED IN THIS CAR AND IM NOT THE FIRST. I FEEL LIKE I HAVE TO GO 50 MPH TO KEEP UP WITH THE LOCAL SIDE STREET DRIVERS. IT DOES NOT HAVE MUCH POWER IN IT AND THATS WHY IT BURNS SO MUCH GAS WHEN YOURE GOING UPHILL ON THE CAR....read morehide

- Good fuel economy
- Very expensive maintenance up keep.
$107.00 just to fix one head light bulb. Two weeks later second head light burns out.5 hrs trying to replace aircleaner. All maintenance must be preformed by a voltswagan dealer. making all regular maintenance very costly.

- 50 MPG
- expensive maintenance schedule, arm rest broke - $300 to repair!
The mileage is great with the diesel not noisy as other diesel's. The comfort is great, but for a long trip, the lower back could use a little more support.
