- This car is a blast to drive- WHEN IT WORKS!
- Serious safety problems!
I owned my 2007 VW GTI for about 6 months and it has been in for repairs well over 2 months in total.
First, the information center was defective. That took over a week to replace.
Most serious problem could be related to the engine, transmission, turbo- don't know yet for sure what is the source. The dealer can't identify the problem and VW of America tech support has been no help at all. Possibly related to heat, since it seems to occur most often when the temperature is high here in Tucson.
As you step on the gas (I have automatic transmission), the car starts to drop out of gear and will not respond. It feels like you are slamming on the brakes, according to my friend who was driving with me during one of these "seizures". This is a very serious safety issue. We could have been killed when the car unexpectedly went into a seizure as we were trying to merge with traffic.
I have been told by the dealer that other VW's in AZ have been reported as having the same problem. I am VERY disappointed in VW of America's lack of response to this problem. To date, I have not yet received confirmation that a fix has been found and it has been more than 2 months since I first reported the problem.
The dealer replaced the thrust sensors and the fuel pump, but the problem persisted. They finally gave me a full refund since they could not fix the car.
I would strongly encourage that anyone interested in this vehicle find out if the source of this problem has been identified and fixed before buying one of these cars. To my knowledge, both the GTI and the GLI have experienced the same problem.
I have been in regular contact with VW of America's Customer Advocate center, without any resolution. I was promised that the issue had been escalated. In fact, they have admittedly dropped the ball on this issue and closed the file in error without ever contacting me. I have finally given up on them, too, since my most recent call to request that they re-open their investigation and provide me with confirmation that a fix been found has again gone unanswered.
When the car was running properly, it was a lot of fun to drive. Unfortunately, the agony of having a brand new car in and out of service for such a protracted period of time, and because of such a serious safety issue, ruined any enjoyment that I had experienced.
