2007 Volkswagen New GTI User Reviews
2.0T Coupe shown
- $9,649 - $11,909
- No trim specified for this review
- constant torque between 1800 and 5000 RPM, good traction
- very hard ride, bad sound system
If you ever test-drive this car, do it on a highway with lots of bumps. The ride is so stiff the car is moving all the time. We got back-pain because of it. This may be ok for German roads but not for California roads. And you never knew how bad a road really is, until you drove it in such a car. The engine is great -- torque over a very wide band -- compare the torque of this car with the 240HP Honda Coupe -- they nearly match -- but the Honda reaches this torque only at 5000RPM. So this car is more powerful at such RPMs where it really matters -- from 1800-4000RPM. When are you actually driving at 5000RPM -- nearly never. Power=Torque*RotationalSpeed*2*pi.
The stiff ride also has a good side -- when accelerating there is nearly no movement of the car and thus the front-wheels don't start to slip.
Add to this the electronic differential lock and you get very good traction. I hate the Americanized red rear blinkers and would consider importing rear light lenses from Europe to get around this.
The previous GTI generation has a much softer suspension
-- no comparison with this car.
