Just turned in my '04 Golf a month ago for the 2008 GTI 6 speed manual. WOW. This car is incredible and a dream come true. Everything I always wished my Golf could be. Although for the price (My MSRP was around 25k, I wish it came with power and heated seats, dual climate and bluetooth).
Other than the somewhat rough ride, and the clicking noise I get when I turn my rear defost and/or wiper on (Sounds like a blinker type noise in the dash but the dealer said it was normal, i doubt it) the car is flawless. Especially after driving the previous genaration Golf for almost 4 years. This is a major upgrade for about 4k more than what I paid for the Golf GLS.
The interior is awesome, well built with that expensive German car feel. My only complaint is the seat adjustment that is a VW staple. Instead of an easy lever you have to manually spin a round thing to adjust the seats, a pain in the ass and something I've never been able to understand about VW. Why do they do this? Not a big deal though. The 2 red lights that light up the shifter at night are sweet and are usually only found on BMW, Mercedes, Audi, etc.
Not alot of cheap plastic parts like you'll find on alot of other cars in the GTI's class. The brushed aluminum metal interior accents are a nice, high end touch. I also like the sturdier and wider arm rest that mimics the BMW 3 series. The '04 Gold armrest was too small. Plaid seats are cool although I would have preferred leather. interior lights are just as cool if not cooler than the older genaration. At night the interior feels awfully expensive and makes you not want to get out of the car.
Love the stearing wheel with the volume controls. Also love the sunglass holder and the standard xenon headlights are beautiful along with fog lights. Sirius satelite and 6 disc changer nice too. The iPod adapter in the armrest is a nice feature and works great with my iPhone. Sound system is good but I feel like the standard Monsoon system in my Golf was better.
Wish thWish the standard heating controls were a little more high end feeling. The exterior styling is great, wish I got the 4 door. Love the front grill, looks very mean especially when you see this beast coming up in your rearview. Love the new integrated VW logo that doubles as the latch. Monster mats are great too.
Did I forget to mention that this car is fast, fast, fast. My salesperson said before the test drive that the GTI is a rocket with 4 wheels. He wasn't lying. Very quick, very responsive, beats just about any car on the road off the line, and turns heads every day. This is defintely the best car I've ever had and a nice option if you can't afford a more expensive Audi or BMW. There is simply no better car for the price. I said the same thing about my Golf which for the price was the best car in its class. If you're considering a GTI purchase, you will not be dissapointed. Very sweet car.
