2005 Volkswagen Passat Sedan User Reviews
- $5,708 - $7,175
- Great design, details, interior comfort, performance, fuel economy, GPS, handling.
- ...had my '04 GLS a year, no complaints yet.
I don't know what all those guys with lexis' Infinity. Maxima, etc do with the extra horse power... the 1.8T has phenominal pickup almost no turbo lag due to it's close ratio 5 speed auto... I've had her up to 135 and still accelerating, never really topped her out... who needs to go faster than that??
I park next to one of them and compare interior styling. My leather beats their leather every time. VW design makes almost anything else look like an over-made up tart by comparison, especially Maxima, which
must have been styled by a refugee from Matel. This car is an increadible value, I could aford to pay more but honestly, why?...read morehide

- Nice Look, very quiet and smooth ride, storng disk break and 1.8T engine
- Hard to change oil and air filter.
If VW makes oil and filter change easier to perform, their reliability rating would probably go up. Many non-technical drivers do not change those at recommended intervals because it's too expensive to change at the dealer or because it's too hard to change themselves. I recommend synthetic motor oil and filter from Mobil. Air filter needs
to be changed more often that what is recommended in the manual for the best performance. In the manual, it says 25000. I change it every 10000 and after it is changed , I can feel that car performs a lot better everytime. Cabin air filter is hard to reach. And it causes bad smell if you don't change it every 6 months. It's automatic is awesome. You have to use manual shift mode. You will feel the power you never thought it had in it. Auto mode shifts at 2K rpm to save gas. When you use manual mode try shifting at 3K. It's going to fly. No transmission recalls like Honda or Toyota. VW transmission was designed by Porche. Solid all around. Nissan used it as a benchmark car when they designed Maxima. Passat is sitll better....read morehide

- Looks Great!! Many compliments !!!
- Not Reliable... Fuel pump problem , 4 cyl. sluggish
I loved the car when we bought it but at almost 50,000 miles it has been trouble. Broke down had to be towed on the way to Vegas. VW dealer in Vegas was terrible and never fixed the Fuel pump problem correctly. Since then it has been too costly. We were quoted $1,200 to fix all current problems for a 2 year old car. Last night we traded it in for a Nissan Altima. Soft resale too. We of cousre had an upside down loan on the VW. Not a good experience. Tried to get help through VW consumer line. All they would do is give us 10% off. Not good service. I did loved it for awhile. I think I will have better luck with my new Nissan....read morehide

- Comfortable Interior, Smooth Ride, Fun to Drive
- Rain Sensing Wipers, High Maint. Cost, small trunk capacity
Good value for the money. This car is fun to drive and not as expensive as some of it's other german competition. Same price as an Accord, but a much better vehicle. High frequency of maintenance can sometimes be an issue.

- Excellent Fuel Economy, very comfortable, DIESEL, handling is very good
- center console armrest needs to be moved forward, no bluetooth, no nav
This is an excellent car and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a mid-sized sedan or wagon. The fuel economy is excellent and the EPA averages are on the conservative side. We've observed 33mpg in city driving and 41mpg on the hwy. The car is very comfortable and the 205/55 16" tires hold the road very well.
The option for a diesel will be paid back not only in fuel economy, but also vehicle longevity (diesels have fewer moving parts and last much longer than gasoline engines) which will also translate into higher resale value. The diesel performs adequately in standing take offs, but really shines when passing or merging.
The GLS is well appointed, especially with the Leather/Wood and heated seats package.
To get the same fuel economy out of a midsized car there are three options, Passat TDI (GLS ~$28K), Accord-Hybrid (~$33K) or the Mecedes E320 CDI (~$55k). The Passat is the best value for the buck out of the fuel sipping midsized car....read morehide

- comfort, 170 HP-strong acceleration, the look of the interior&controls, decent gas mileage
- manual seats on the one I purchased, VW recommends premium fuel for this car
I have the Passat 2005 GLS sedan. It has the 1.8L 4 cylinder Turbo engine which has 170 HP.
I would recommend this car without hesitation if you are considering purchasing a Toyota Camry, Nissan Maxima or Altima, or Honda Accord. This is my first European car, and I am in LOVE. I had my heart set on a Camry XLE, until I test drove the Passat. The car is responsive, and just feels solid as a rock when you're in the driver's seat. It has really cool purple & red meters & controls (if you like that kinda thing like I do ;-). I love the 17 in. optional alloy wheels. Very nice Monsoon sound system. The leatherette is nice, and I am unable to tell that it is not leather. The tiptronic automatic transmission is also another really nice option I have.
I read reviews of loud tire noise, but so far I have not noticed it. The engine is a little louder than you'll get with it's American competitiors, but I think that's just that it's European. It drives differently and sounds differently. You will definitely notice the gear shifts - it feels almost like you are in a manual transmission automobile - but, again, I like it.
It is a good value. I'm averaging 29 mpg, which I am happy with. I paid $24,500 for my Passat (100 over invoice) at Gossett in Memphis. There will be a body style change with the 2006 models, but I loved this car so much, I decided not to wait. Maybe we'll buy my husband a 2006. ;-)...read morehide

- Features, car comes well equipped with lots of standard features, there is a lot of detail into the
- Expensive maintenance, poor gas mileage, engine is too small for 2 ton car
I would not recommend this car if you are going to choose between a Toyota Camry, Nissan Altima, Honda Accord or Mazda6. The car's engine is not well suited for American driving conditions and has not been able to yield gas mileage over 17mpg. The car smells of exhaust when the heater is on and dealership provides you with poor service.
VW needs to look a not building a car that moves like a tank and be honest about gas mileage for vehicle. VW needs to be like Hyundai and offer free servicing for a car with poor performance and overpriced by 3000-4500 over leading competitors. VW Passat is not a direct competitior to AUDI or BMW. Please drive all products that you want to compare for at least 4-6 hours prior to purchasing....read morehide

- Comfort, appearance, handling
- Fuel economy in colder climates--terrible
I bought my 04 Passat in June and was getting terrific milage. However, as soon as the Minnesota temperatures plummeted, so did my milage. I am now getting a dismal 15 mpg. I am very, very disappointed since I purchased this car based on fuel efficiency.
