2007 Volkswagen Passat Wagon

- Good turning radius, nice looks, good highway mileage
- Lousy radio, road noise, lack of right foot room for driver, musty vent smell
I am happy with the car, it was that expensive after all. The thing has a ton of interior room - my previous car was a Volvo 240 wagon. The musty odor from the vent system is very annoying in a new car. It has been serviced and that fixed it for about 2 weeks. I just leave the window open when I part in the garage and it seems to help. The turning radius is amazingly good and the steering does not whine at full lock. The key can be hard to remove at times. The chrome on the gear selector is blinding in the sun. The sun visors are cool - they actually extend along the rail when you want (had not seen that before maybe this is common). it is not a nimble car - sort of un VW-like in that regard and there is a LOT of road noise. The electronics are cool and I have had no problems with them. The rear gate operates remotely from the key fob. Do not lose that key fob - they are $$. I use Regular gas and have heard no knocking. There is not enough room on the driver's right foot. The latter is my main issue with this car. Good visibility. Lots of places to stash things and the storage unit for driver can be used with the lid up slightly so it reaches your elbow. The interior is a little "hard" no padding on door etc. Easy to get rear seats down. I like the tranny's Auto Hold feature to relax the driver's foot at stops or in stop and go traffic....read morehide

- Overwhelmingly dissatisfying experience for us
My husband and I had considered ourselves Volkswagen loyalists until we came into an unfortunate arrangement through our decision to purchase a 2007 Passat Wagon. We have made several trips to our local dealership (Fairfax VW) to have the problems solved, but we keep coming back. We've decided we're wasting our time and put the car up for sale. We confirmed our instinct that the Passat is a product unworthy of our troubles by witnessing the huge number of 07's with lower miles on them that have been put up for sale.
We have had the usual problems (radio, rattles and shudders and thuds, wobbly steering) and then some (bad ground wire, deteriorating interior finishes and components that one wouldn't expect after 9 months of use).
I am fed up with Fairfax and with VW and will never buy or lease a Volkswagen again....read morehide

- Good fuel economy
- Car feels hollow and I question durability
We purchased a new Passat because the lease on our 04 sedan was up. We thought we'd spring for the extra utility and went with a new wagon.
We instantly liked the extra room and took a trip to Disneyworld over spring break when the kids were out of school. On the way, my message center told me to stop the car. We pulled over and got out and nothing seemed wrong. I reasoned it was a glitch and got back on the highway and started driving.
Just after we hit the middle of nowhere, the radio stopped working. Then a headlight blew out. We took the car to a dealership in Jacksonville and spent an unexpected night in a pretty city. I was kind of let down because I like the car, it drives pretty well (brakes are not great) and is really nice, if not a little hollow feeling compared to my 04.
So I spoke with the service manager and took a liking to him. I asked if electrical problems are common on the new Passats, and he said he's always working on them. He replaced the stereo and a servo? or something and put in a new headlight bulb.
He told me he loves the car but the problems customers have had with them disappoints him. Is my love affair with this car premature? To be continued in another 5,000 miles.......read morehide

- Looks good and feels big on the road, decent fuel economy
- turbo lag, reliability, dealership service
I bought this car for my wife six months ago. It serves our family well but we have encountered several reliability problems that should not be present in a car with only 6,000 miles.
Dealership service is pretty bad considering how they treat me when I take my 04 Altima in for service.
Problems I've had have run the gammit from body hardware issues (plastic scratching and actually peeling) to several electrical issues (check engine light, sensors going haywire, radio dying on us).
I'm happy I've only leased the car. It seems as if Bonnie's in a rental car far too often.
Volkswagen needs to build a better car. For those who are consumer-minded out there, I believe you would be better served looking elsewhere....read morehide

- worked a great price (22% off msrp) on $26,000 wagon!
- BUT, after 10K miles it rattles like a box of biscuits lousy radio, lousy dealership service,
Thank goodness I got a great price on this car, because I'm going to sell it in another year. I've had the car seven months now and have put a little over 10K miles on it. I have experienced many of the same problems---some substantial---that many of the reviewers have experienced. The car rattles, the wind noise is somewhat harsh, the minor electrical problems are annoying, the audio quality of the radio compares to that in my 80's Chevy. Most perplexing of all is VW's LOUSY dealership service. FAIRFAX VW in northern VA offers nothing short of rudeness and slow service, and they would rather lie to you than give you a real head's up as to how long the service is going to take and what should be expected. Rarely has the car been ready on time. I have attempted to voice my complaint to the GM John Burns but he never returns emails.
It is abundantly clear to me even early on in my preferred ownership tenure that VW of America does not own the need to satisfy its customers, and the message is getting through to the dealerships that as long as they can fix the problem and bill it to VW's warranty, repeat customer loyalty takes a back seat. Loan cars are always out---that should tell you something.
Other than that, the car drives really well if the little things don't get to you. I have had the car in for service 7 times in the past seven months. I've had two radios, which indicates to me the sound quality is an inherent problem, not one of a bad example. I have the automatic and I'm a normal driver, not too heavy on the gas, but I only average 22mpg combined, which is short of the EPA ratings. Perhaps when the EPA changes its rating system next year, the government will be closer to informing the public of real MPG estimates.
This car is a real let-down, and the only concrete advice I could offer to those interested in leasing or making a purchase is to be patient and pay nowhere close to full price. I paid $20,350 plus tax. I'm sure you can negotiate one now for lower because my research shows me VW sales have slipped 17% over the past month. This should tell you something about their race to catch up with Toyota as well as the industry median: with todays product quality and customer service practices, it will never happen. This is a real shame to me because the car is visually appealing and comfortable. Parting advice: look elsewhere unless you like kicking tires on car lots as you wait, and wait, and wait for service for repeat issues....read morehide

- Good fuel economy for it's size and class, comfortable seats and ride, standard sound system is fine
- The cost to operate the car are just too high, from oil changes on up.
I have a 2005 manual which was real hard to find. They had to use the locator to find it so I didn't get to test drive it. It is the tenth VW I have owned in a row, rabbits, golfs, jettas and a passat. Most of them used. I liked every one of them. This one I bought new and was the most expensive one so far and a real disapointment. So much so that it will be a long time before I consider a VW again. No fun to drive at all. It drives and rides like a Buick and I don't mean that in a good way. What a slug. Every other VW I had, even diesel rabbits had "farfagnugen" just that something that made evey VW I have driven from Bugs on up fun to drive. This car is expensive to own, not nimble, not lively, not light on its feet, no personality. They have up sized this model like American carmakers do to the point of ruinning it....read morehide

- wonderful ride - LOVE THIS CAR - great value for the price
- would like a second powered seat in front and repeat on the cd player
I've had Mercedes wagons, BMW's and I love this car even more -- it's beautiful and rides so smooth. Perfect car for me -- very versatile. Love the lights in the dash and the chrome inside. Very sleek.

- good gas mileage, lots of storage, nice looking car.
- picks up road noise, was expecting better ac performance.
The chrome in the gear box sometimes bothers me while driving at noon time due to the sunlight reflection. Can't adjust the ac vent to put the air flow directly to my face comparing to the other car (Acura) that I have.

This is my first wagon, and second Volkswagon I have purchased in a month's time. I could not be happier with this vehicle!! I have driven an SUV for over 25 years, and thought that I would miss something transitioning to a wagon. I have only had the car for a week...but I love it. It was such a great value and far better than anything I had test-driven for the price....read morehide
