Had this car about 2 years now and absolutely love it! Handles like the German engineering car you expect and love! Sweet heated seats and awesome cold air conditioning. Pleasure to drive! I have had many cars in my time, this is by far my favorite. The inside panel lights at night time are easy to read and pleasant on the eyes. Drive it and you will love it!...read morehide

- Fun, fast, and loaded for the price!
- Fuel economy could be a little better!
Purchased As Used
I just bought my 2008 VW Rabbit 4-door on June 22, 2010. It is Silver with the 6 speed automatic tiptronic transmission and the 2.5L in-line 5 cylinder gasoline engine. So far, I love this little car, and the more I drive it the more I love it. My previous car was a 1999 Saturn SL4/1.8L 4-cylinder. It too was a great car and is still going at 150,000 miles. But it struggled getting on the interstate and with the high miles, was time to be replaced. The features that came standard on my Rabbit were awsome, and the price was unbelievable. The blue book value when I bought it was $15,800 and I bought it for $11,900. I can't say enough good things about this car from the handling to the get up and go power. The heated seats and side mirrors also intreagued me. The only drawback I have found so far is the fuel economy. I drive 50 miles a day round trip to and from work, and I do 75 mph on the interstate. I get 27/28 mpg on the highway and 23/24 mpg in the city. I would like to see the Rabbit getting 35/37 on the highway and 27/29 in the city. But that is my only cons to this car, the handling and ride are great. I haven't had it long enough to have driven it in the snow, so I am anxious to see how well the ASR handles in the snow and slush. I did drive it in heavy rain the other day, and it handled remarkably well, with no feel of sluggish steering or any kind of hydro-plaining what so ever. I also like how the radio volume automatically turns down when slowing from highway speeds to city speeds. The sound system that comes in this car is great, it sounds like I have an amplifier with a 12" sub-woofer when the bass is turned all the way up, and that also had me realling. I could sit here all day talking about the things I love about my Rabbit, but I will save you the time and say "buy this car if you are tired of paying more for less." You'll definitely get your money's worth and then some from the VW family....read morehide

- Great grip on the road, roomy interior, easy to park
- Mediocre gas mileage (21 city/28 highway) for small car
Great grip on the road provides security and safety, especially when taking evasive action. We bought our Bunny 3 weeks ago at my wife's instance and we have been very happy with the experience. Fold down back-seats provide extra cargo space and optional roof gear makes moving large bulk possible. Parking in NYC is a breeze as other larger cars, even small ones with trunks, can't park in place we can, except maybe for the Smart Car. Downside is definitely the gas mileage that is disappointing given the small car size. But I guess that is the trade off with a powerful engine....read morehide

- fun to drive, comfortable, sound system, transmission, features
- tires noisy, ac temp settings, would like more console storage
This car is a joy to drive, really darts in and out of traffic, very responsive. American car manufacturers would sell everything they could make if they would make a car with the Rabbits content, quality and features at the same price. A high quality small car, not "dumbed down" for American tastes. I am 55 years old and driving the Rabbit makes me feel 30 years younger....read morehide

- Appearance, easy-to-use controls, fuel economy, great values
- No leather seat option
Influenced by my friend who bought a 2007 Rabbit, I started paying attention to this "reborn" VW. I've been driving my 2008 Rabbit 4-door since Feb, after 5 weeks of waiting as I ordered the 16" wheel package, sunroof, and manual transmission. It was my first VW (after years of having my Toyota), and it was my first purchase requiring special order. I can honestly say it's well worth the wait.
From the outside, it looks attractive with simple layout of the lights, but I am especially impressed by its super super user-friendly console, A/C and audio controls. It was actually one major factor that I decided to choose this Rabbit. There are no unnecessary buttons at all. Every control is self-explanatory and easy to use. With the manual transmission, it gives out very decent acceleration and responsiveness. I definitely recommend this car to anyone who is looking for a practical car with great values and fun of driving....read morehide

- Interior fit and finish, handling, gas mileage
- center console intrudes on leg room, rear hatch
This is our fourth Volkswagen and definitely one of the best. With about 2K miles on her since our purchase we have very few complaints.
The 5cyl. engine is an extremely solid powerplant that produces more than adequate horsepower and is torquey as all get out. Sure it doesn't net the best gas mileage in the market segment, but I am satisfied overall with the result (24 City 32 Highway on 87).
When the wife and I were in the market for a second commuter car we considered a Prius among others. After some quick math we realized that the additional cost for a Prius we wouldn't break even over the Rabbit for several years.
One thing VW does really well is interior design. Compare to the hard plastics of similarly priced compacts and you'll know what I'm talking about. The rabbit features high quality velor fabric, multi-tone and texture panels etc. She also handles like she's on rails. I will say that the center console intrudes on my leg room a bit (6'2") but my wife doesn't complain (5'7")
The rear hatch needs some help. How about a strap to help close the thing or maybe like the Passat...autoclose. My wife is short and has a tough time closing it. A few weeks ago she pinched her finger pretty seriously....read morehide

- Quality built, versitile, smooth ride, performance when needed
- None yet!!
We've had our '08 4dr for about 2 months and love it. Have found nothing to complain about, and challenge those that do. The build quality is excellent, features great and I cannot say anything bad about it. It will not ride as smooth as a big car, because it isn't.
It will not get as good as gas mileage as a 4 cylinder, because it isn't. However; the ride is smoth and the knowledge it is Autobahn
ready, makes me smile on I-94, passing the mammoth SUV and
gas stations. OK, there's still the kid in me. At 6' 1" & 300#, it serves me very well. I told my wife at the autoshow, built by German for Germans. Farfegnugen, is what it is all about, pleasurable driving.
I never thought I would own a Volkswagen....read morehide

- lots of standard features that normally would be extra; has good handling, great turning wheelbase
- running daylights
had my vehicle for four days, and what a major difference with the 5-cylinder from a 4-cylinder... once i get into 2nd gear, it roars and is very responsive with good tight handling... everything in the cabin seems to be within good reach & has a good quality feel... so far i haven't come up with any issues... i had to wait close to eleven weeks to have it built, shipped from germany to long beach, CA in order to get the rear side airbags option, i also went with the 16" alloy wheels which are the only two extras... pricing was very reasonable, and the staff at the dealership were very helpful with delivery status updates, and the car prepping was top-notch... i can't reiterate the quickness of my reflex silver rabbit, and oh did i mention the great standard (for 4-door) 10-speaker 6-disc CD player, gotta love those mp3's... bad brains, hot snakes, deerhoof, burning brides, 400 blows, murder city devils, guitar wolf & link wray never sounded so exquisite......read morehide

- Sporty appearance, peppy engine, comfortable interior, many standard safety features, fun to drive
- Noisy factory tires (Conti's)
Now that I've put 1000 miles on my Rabbit, I feel ready to share my impressions.
I am very pleased with the quality of the interior/exterior. The Rabbit has a sporty appearance and feel to it. Don't get me wrong...it's no Corvette, but it is very fun to drive. The steering is responsive, especially when cornering. The interior is very comfortable. Heated cloth seats...very nice! The stereo system is more than adequate. I especially have enjoyed the integrated Sirius satellite.
I am also pleased with the MPG relative to the size of the engine. I previously owned a Mustang, so almost anything is better. I started at 24 MPG, but this number is increasing as the engine breaks in. Most of my commute to work is highway, so keep this in mind.
If you are looking for the most fuel efficient compact car possible, this may not be the car for you. However, if you are willing to trade-off some fuel efficiency for an exciting car to drive, check this car out. I looked at some other "similar" vehicles and found the Rabbit to be the best fit for my liking....read morehide

- handling, heated seats, FUN to drive, extremely well made European aestheics
- arm rest, road noise and milage
This is the perfect car! Worth every single penny. It corners like nothing else because of the steering system. I bought the triptonic 6 speed and it's such a fun car to drive. Definitely go for the 16' wheels. The mileage is a little disappointing but the European styling makes up for that. I would recommend this car to anyone. Great inside lighting and color dash panel. Solid construction. This makes the CRV feel like driving a soda can on wheels. Low tire indicators, service reminders, etc. Luxury meets economy. I don't even see how they can make much money, with the quality of the car. BUY ONE!...read morehide
