- too many problems

This is my 3rd time writing a review, because every time i do, it gets deleted. I have a 2009 tiguan and have been having nothing but problems with. The first trip to the dealer was due to a check engine light. Everytime they fixed the problem, something else was wrong with it. My car was at the dealership for a month! The day i picked it up, it went right back to the dealership due to the coolant leaking. Oh and to top it off the dealership had scratched my car. My car is back at the dealership due to a coolant leak, which i had to wait for roadside assistance for 3 hours! Luckily i wasnt alone. According to the dealership, my car has a hole in the radiator. In my opinion its just a big piece of crap. I would not recommend this car to anyone!...read morehide

- smooth ride, plush interior, great sound system
Purchased As New
comfortable seating (I'm short and the seat adjusts up/down, tilts, and moves forward/backward easily so the driving is great)
The 6 cd player system has a great sound
I am really glad that I choose the Tiguan. I saw it in the Auto show a couple of years ago and liked it then....just took awhile for me to actually get one....read morehide

- peppy, fun to drive, good mileage, good looking and roomy
- not a V6

Got our 2009 Tiguan on Memorial Day and have been very pleased with it. We cried when we traded our beloved 2001 Saab 9-5 wagon for it and would have gotten another Saab except for the uncertainty surrounding that brand. However, we soon learned to love the Tiguan. We have two dogs and love to camp so we needed something small enough for the city but with room for the dogs and with the power to climb up the Sierras. The Tiguan has delivered on all counts and gives excellent mileage as well. People are astonished at the plush interior, the giant sun roof and the excellent navigation. I'd recommend this car to anyone based on our experience so far....read morehide

- Extremely high quality, in and out; made in Germany; very good fuel economy
- Not available yet as a TDI
Purchased As New
I agree with most of the other outstanding reviews. Just wanted to add that the Tiguan can handle big dogs. I have two Rottweilers and they can comfortably sit in the back, with the seats up, with no problem. And they love the sunroof! I have an SEL with leather and it cleans up easily with a vacuum. The interior material on the roof can also be easily vacuumed.
I could not be more pleased with this vehicle. This is the first foreign car I've owned and wonder now why I waited so long to buy a VW. The quality, worksmanship, engineering, and performace for the price can't be matched. I good friend of mine is a master mechanic and he refused to recommend anything else. It is more expensive than other cars in its class, but it's worth it.
I left the reliability rating as four only because I have less than 3000 miles; no problems so far but it's too early to rate....read morehide

- its a GTI in SUV form!
- Premium car looks doesn't match its rallysport soul!
Purchased As New
Had a drive in one of these. Its really a hoot to drive mate!! For a car that drives this fast, the outer should look like some modified GTI or falcon with lots of wordings like 'catch me if you can'! What a fast car. I felt this to be better than the Golf GTI as the control at high speeds was very very good in this. This is a all wheel drive car. I have never ever even imagined a SUV driving like this. After we got down, I really couldnt believe that a thing looking like 'this' driving like 'that'!! Next time you see one on the highway, don't even imagine overtaking it!!...read morehide

- Excellent Fit & Finish; quiet , gorgeous panoramic moonroof; hoot to drive; agile & peppy
- My wife won't get out of the car

Take one test drive of the Tiguan SEL, and you will never set foot near a RAV 4, CRV, or Forester.
This car is pure fun to drive. We got the 4-Motion on both our Tiguans, and it has proven to be very sure footed in the Upstate NY winters, as well as the New England slop & slush.
The kids love the HUGE sliding moonroof ( I think it opens to almost 12 sqr feet) and it's almost like a convertible . The Tiguan seems to be the ideal power - weight balance - very sturdy construction (5-star front & side crash ratings) , yet plenty of road agility and pep. It is real easy to roll-past the 65mph speedometer hash-mark in this buggy.
The 6-speed Tiptronic transmission is smooooottthhhhhh.
Tiguan's interior is very well thought-out. All fascia, knobs, and do-hickeys have been put through finishing school. It is elegant, with no gratuitous & clunky clusters of plastic toggles or techno- geekery. Every control is well-placed, and very much reminds me of the console of my '95 Accord (before Honda started crapping those up).
Great front driver and passenger visibility: expansive front windshield, thin corner pillars, and no "bunker-style" dashboard assure that you can see the road.
If you DO like electronic gadgetry, get the NAV . At more than $2,000 , it's an expensive option, but it is without a doubt the best in the industry . . very large screen, easy to read, sharp resolution. . . and, well, it just looks really cool the way VW built it into the center console
We have had one Tiguan for 12 months, and the other since January. Absolutely no complaints or repair issues.
I would not get a Tiguan if you have a large family. Tiguan is a small sport ute and is just right for a family of 4. You'll want something bigger for families of 5+
The rear passenger compartment is cavernous. It really surprised me the first time I sat in the back of the Tiguan. More legroom and headroom than we had in our Jeep Grand Cherokee. We have already taken the kids to 2 drive-in movies in the Tiguan, and, despite the D-Day sized amount of blankets, pillows, food & bev`supplies - there was plenty of room for all....read morehide

- Fun to drive, fuel econ, style, fun to drive, no maintenance, fast, fun to drive
- Price of the SEL with all the toys

We purchased our SEL in October 08, I have owned over 30 cars in my life and this has been to most enjoyable vechicle I have ever purchased. The price tag was more than I wanted to pay compared to other SUVs, but after driving it for a few months now, it was worth it. I learned to hate car dealers, but the VW dealer in Sanford, Fl. was outstanding, this was the best car buying experience I ever had.
If you can, go for it, I know once you have you won't mind the price tag....read morehide

- Typical clean design VW interior. Good proportions. Good brakes and AWD system.
- Needed repairs already. Guzzles gas and oil. Useless cargo area. Questionable reliability. Price
This is now the third time I am writing my review because it was deleted twice, perhaps because the shady dealers don't want you to know any other experiences except great reviews. Well I have news for them" not everyone is having a great time with the Tiguan. My experience--
I may be a bit hard on my judgement but coming from a 2002 Toyota RAV4 which was 100% reliable, I can say this so far has not been the SUV I imagined. First, the test drive went well at Potamkin VW. I liked it, it looked good, I needed a small SUV immediately, the lease rate was good, the dealer threw in so many options for free, they were practically giving them away I took it the day I went shopping.
After just 2 months I have a record 3 problems- all major. Not even after 5 lousy weeks the drive unit in the front managed to break a seal, leaking out all oil and then finally ceasing on I95 between exit 14A and 15. The tow truck came within minutes as did a Police car to make sure everything was ok. The smoke pouring out of the hood looked like a fire but it was not. They took the Tig in and gave me a Jetta for one week. When I got my Tig back all seemed well until the keyfob deprogrammed itself and I was locked out of my car. My second keyfob worked however. Not a major deal but annoying on a 6 week old SUV! Finally, this past week was the last straw when the wipers refused to work on an icy day when I needed it the most. The washer sprayer worked but the wipers would not move. I have to wipe the window with a paper towel just to get to work. Perhaps I got a lemon as all manufacturers have their bad ones but I did a little research and discovered many complaints about VW's. Sure they drive nice when they work but who wants a car that breaks down all the time? Also in the waiting room I talked to owners who also had so many complaints they could not finish! One guy had a brand new Tiguan with 300 miles and the engine light came on!! He wanted his money back. Further, the Jetta that I had from the dealer for one weak had so many rattles and squeeks it really set into my mind that VW makes junk and they sell it as "premium" class.
Performance is only one star because although it does have decent power around town, it drinks gas like a big V8 engine, not a small 4 cylinder. Also, on the highway it runs out of power and it has been drinking oil as of late. The dealer needs to add another three quarts of oil already! Value is poor because wih just a few options it costs close to $40k!
Never again I say. I would stick with my Toyota which was 100% relaible for 7 years and 100k miles not a porblem. Even my wife's Chevy Tahoe with 130k miles never had a single problem. Besides there are so many better small SUVs out on the market there is no reason to buy one that is unreliable. Do you want to be stuck somewhere in the winter with an unreliable car?...read morehide

- Fuel Economy, Comfort, Reliability, Fit and Finish, handling
- Towing Capacity
I traded my '03 Honda CRV for this car based on what I read and Consumer reports. I am really surprised how much better it is in comfort, quality and overall driving feel. I drive a lot. I already have 5000 miles on it and have had NO issues with reliability. No problems and I average about 28 MPG on my daily highway runs. I love the power and the way it handles in corners and how solid it feels on the highway. The only thing I may want is slightly more towing capacity for pulling my sailplane trailer. Otherwise the Tiguan is everything I wanted....read morehide

- Good fuel economy, Fun drive, comfortable on longer trips also
- would have preferred seats were electric with memory vs. manual
We have owned the vehicle for several months now. One of the first to buy one in our market got lots of looks and questions from people. The car is mainly driven on highway for my wife's travels and we have also taken it on a family trip. 6 hours each way with 2 children under 5 and everyone had enough space, good room to carry all the bags, etc. Seats are comfortable, ride is nice, quick when needed for acceleration or braking. We did recently have a body repair needed due to an accident and even the body shop/parts person was surprised that the costs for the parts was lower then expected. Overall the car has performed very well in all facets. Even with two 5 point harness seats in the back still good amount of room surrounding them. And lots of compliments from people who stop to look at the vehicle....read morehide
